All out for 14 – China slump to lowest women's T20I total

UAE’s winning margin of 189 was also a record in women’s T20Is

China were bowled out for 14, the lowest women’s T20I total ever, sinking to a 189-run defeat against UAE on Sunday. The margin of victory was the largest ever in women’s T20Is, pushing Namibia’s defeat of Lesotho by 179 runs in August 2018 to second place.UAE had elected to bat first in a Group B game at the ongoing Thailand Women’s T20 Smash, a 10-team tournament underway in Bangkok, and put on 203 for 3. China’s reply lasted only 48 minutes and 10 overs, and featured six ducks with a top score of four. The only ones to get off the mark were opener Zhang Chan (2), wicketkeeper Zhang Yanling (3), No. 4 Hin Lili (4) and Zhou Ying (3), as China slumped to 12 for 6 in 7.3 overs. In the next over, Ishni Mananelage struck thrice in the first four balls to hasten a swift end.China’s brief outing with the bat came in response to UAE’s highest T20I total, which was underpinned by wicketkeeper-batsman Esha Oza’s 121-run opening stand with Chaya Mughal. Oza, the 20-year-old right-hand batsman, smashed a personal best of 82 off 62 balls, also the highest T20I score by a UAE woman. After Mughal fell for a 38-ball 33 in the 14th over, Kavisha Kumari and Namita DSouza blasted a 51-run third-wicket stand off 18 balls, as five of the seven bowlers used by China conceded over 10 runs per over. The tournament, which also features other fringe women’s international sides such as Nepal, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Bhutan, Indonesia and Myanmar, along with a Thailand A team, is to provide much-needed game-time to the countries ahead of the ICC Women’s 2020 World Cup Qualifiers.Last year, the ICC ruled that all Twenty20 matches between member nations would have international status, with a view to using the T20 format to globalise the game across both men’s and women’s cricket. Although the governing body had initially set July 1, 2018, for the decision to come into effect for women’s matches, all matches at the women’s Asia Cup in June, too, were retrospectively granted international status. For the men’s teams, all matches between ICC members were to be awarded T20I status from January 1, 2019, onwards, following the cut-off point for qualification to the 2020 T20 World Cup.

10 Jermain Defoe 162 goals

Jermain Defoe has enjoyed a marvellous career at a number of different clubs. The Londoner scored 162 goals across 496 appearances in the Premier League, which is a phenomenal total when you consider the fact he never featured for a title-challenging side.

The former England international produced his most prolific top-flight season in 2009/10, scoring 18 goals for Tottenham Hotspur, helping the Lilywhites achieve a fourth-placed finish.

The 41-year-old returned to the North London club in 2022 as part of the Academy coaching staff and as a Club Ambassador.

9 Robbie Fowler 163 goals

Robbie Fowler was a wonderfully gifted footballer and had a deadly left foot, striking 163 Premier League goals in 379 appearances for three different clubs.

Despite a prolific goal return, the Liverpool-born forward only amassed 26 caps for England, which he admitted was ‘nowhere near enough’.

“I only got 26 caps, which was nowhere near enough, and I always felt I was only there to make up the numbers, not be offered a real chance to play,” Fowler said.

Perhaps England undervalued his abilities but his hometown club certainly didn’t. Liverpool fans consider him one of the greatest-ever players to pull on the famous red shirt.

8 Thierry Henry 175 goals

Thierry Henry is often namechecked in conversations regarding the greatest Premier League players of all time, which evinces just how ridiculously good he was.

The former Arsenal forward won a whopping four golden boots in England’s top flight and was a part of the infamous Invincibles team.

Jamie Carragher on Henry: “There is only one winner (greatest striker in Premier League history). It amazes me anyone would ever debate it. It is not even close. Thierry Henry is not only the greatest Premier League striker, he is the greatest Premier League player.”

The Frenchman has the second-best Premier League goal-to-game ratio (0.68) since 2000, a feat only bettered by Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.

7 Frank Lampard 177 goals

Frank Lampard is the only midfielder in the top 10, having netted 177 Premier League goals in 611 appearances.

The former Chelsea skipper had an uncanny knack for arriving late into the penalty area and slotting home, a trait that very few players possessed.

The three-time Premier League champion was one of the best players in the world during his pomp and came second in the 2005 Ballon d’Or rankings to Barcelona’s Ronaldinho.

The 106-cap England international is generally considered the best player to ever play for Chelsea.

Sergio Agüero, who is synonymous with THAT goal against Queens Park Rangers, was a prolific marksman during his 10-year spell at Manchester City.

Quite remarkably, the Argentine forward only won one Golden Boot award, despite surpassing the 20-goal mark in six separate seasons.

Agüero left the Citizens in 2021 and Pep Guardiola was visibly upset when speaking to Sky Sports, admitting that he cannot be replaced.

5 Mohamed Salah 185 goals

Liverpool forward Mo Salah.

There is little doubt that Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah is one of the true PL greats. Approaching 200 goals after steering the Reds to another Premier League title in 2024/25, there seems to be no stopping the Egyptian, who is also set for another Golden Boot.

Only three players have reached a double century, so Salah’s recent contract extension at Liverpool will surely provide the goal machine enough time to get amongst the other heroes of Premier League history.

Salah also leads the way for African Premier League goalscorers by some margin, with former Reds teammate Sadio Mane his closest challenger in that regard, as the Senegalese trails by some 74 goals (and counting).

4 Andrew Cole 187 goals

Andrew Cole held the record for the most goals scored in a 42-game Premier League season, netting a colossal 34 goals for Newcastle United during the 1993/94 campaign.

Another deadly period in front of goal ensued the following season before Manchester United acquired his services for a British transfer record fee worth £6.25m in January 1995.

Cole went on to enjoy a trophy-laden seven-year spell with United and formed a deadly partnership with Dwight Yorke. The duo amassed 53 goals between them during the treble-winning 1998/99 campaign.

3 Wayne Rooney 208 goals

Some will tell you Wayne Rooney underachieved in his career, which is extraordinary considering he became Manchester United and England’s record top goalscorer.

The top 10 players who have never won the Ballon d'Or award

Football FanCast has taken a look at the best players to have never won the award.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Nov 1, 2023

The Birmingham City boss emerged as England’s golden boy as a 16-year-old and was thrust into first-team action thereafter – which was perhaps a contributing factor to his early decline.

And quite unfairly, people forget just how good he was because of that, though, his astonishing 208 Premier League goal tally speaks for itself.

2 Harry Kane 213 goals

Harry Kane is the only active player on this list and was tipped to become the all-time leading Premier League goalscorer before he completed an £86.4m move to Bundesliga Champions Bayern Munich in the summer, so that feat may not be achieved now.

The 30-year-old has started life at Bayern in electrifying form, scoring 21 goals whilst laying on seven assists in just 16 appearances.

Such form could see him acclaim the Ballon d’Or next year, though, he’ll likely have to triumph with England at the Euro’s.

Tottenham Hotspur do have a buyback option, so it will be fascinating to see if Kane does return to the North Londoners before the close of his career.

1 Alan Shearer 260 goals

Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer tops the Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer charts with a total of 260 goals, putting him 47 clear of second-placed Kane.

The Newcastle native collected three Golden Boot awards and fired home 34 goals in a single league season with Blackburn Rovers, helping the Lancashire club acclaim their first and only Premier League title.

Shearer remained loyal to his hometown club and famously turned down two offers from Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United, which ultimately came at the expense of silverware.

But he cemented himself as a Newcastle United legend and now has a statue outside St James’ Park, evincing his heroic status at the Tyneside club.

Former Magpies boss Graeme Souness on Shearer: “In my opinion, Alan Shearer is the greatest English centre-forward there has ever been without a shadow of a doubt; he’s a very, very special player. He makes average balls into great balls.”

Smart planning, smarter execution – how Vidarbha plotted Cheteshwar Pujara's fall

Aditya Sarwate’s third wicket of the day could well be the most important of the final

Saurabh Somani in Nagpur04-Feb-2019

Pujara became Sarwate’s third victim of the day•Getty Images

A well-laid plan and a bowler who could execute it to precision were the ingredients that gave Vidarbha Cheteshwar Pujara’s prized wicket for just 1 in the Ranji Trophy 2018-19 final on Monday.Pujara had come out with Saurashtra at 79 for 2 in reply to Vidarbha’s 312, and the two best opposition bowlers were in operation: Umesh Yadav from the Secretary End, and Aditya Sarwate from the Pavilion End. Sarwate had bowled two spells of two overs each from the other end before changing, and had just dismissed Vishwaraj Jadeja, the batsman playing for the turn to the arm ball and trapped in front.Pujara had one ball to face in the over, the 26th, which he came forward to, and it rolled off a thick bottom edge. Snell Patel didn’t get off strike in Umesh’s next over, and when Sarwate came back, a forward short leg was put in place immediately. A slip and silly point, placed smartly parallel to the stumps, were already there, and Vidarbha were telling Pujara that they were attacking both his outside and inside edges. The silly-point fielder was almost a short gully, waiting to pouch anything that would fly off the outside edge, however softly Pujara might tap it. The close-in cordon showed how well Vidarbha’s think tank, led by head coach Chandrakant Pandit, had read the pitch as well as the batsman – the bounce was low, and Pujara plays with soft hands, so the edges were not going to carry straight and high.ALSO READ: Jaffer and Pujara: genial giants of domestic cricketTo make the plan work, Sarwate bowled straight lines, and a length the forced the batsman to play him. Pujara had already jumped out of the crease a couple of times to defend, but had spotted the dangers. So he was trying to defend from the crease, but was still tentative. He played out a maiden. In his next over, Sarwate maintained the same line of attack. The first ball, Pujara prodded towards short leg. The next one, he again lunged forward to defend, but then improvised to tap the ball just short of the close-in fielder on the off side. The slight bounce and turn might have created a sliver of doubt in Pujara’s mind as he appeared to be in two minds trying to defend the next delivery. The ball had pitched on a length that drew him forward, but Pujara stopped midway, attempted to play it down, but the bounce meant a thick outside edge off the top of his bat and Wasim Jaffer neatly, and gleefully, accepted the offering.”Pujara is the biggest wicket I’ve got,” Sarwate said after the day’s play. “We have watched him a lot, and we saw him on the Australia tour also. We felt that initially, he is a bit tentative, and he jabs at the ball. That is why we kept a short leg. If the odd ball turns, then there is a silly point. Maybe he played half-cocked which is why he got out.”We plan the field setting after watching him on TV. If you keep fielders in his weak areas at the start, then his shots get curtailed. He had just come to the crease, with tea also not far away. So our plan was to attack. We didn’t want to let him step out, which he does a lot. We thought the more we make him play from the crease, the better it will be for us.”Vijay Dahiya, the former India wicketkeeper who was commentating on TV at the time, said the wicket was a tribute to Vidarbha’s smart planning. “The field placement according to me is always as per the batsman. Full marks to Vidarbha’s management here,” Dahiya told ESPNcricinfo. “There had been a partnership going on earlier, and there was not a short-leg fielder then. Pujara coming in, such a big name, and straightaway there was a short leg in. And that silly point fielder was absolutely adjacent there. That’s how you take big wickets, with a game plan.”If you look at this pitch, there is not much bounce, so it’s not going to go straight. Even the catch that went to slip, it didn’t carry at normal height, it was going down. When you don’t have enough bounce, you try and pitch it inside. Full marks to their thinking, especially against someone who has had a fantastic Australia trip, and came from the semi-finals scoring a match-winning 131 not out. Credit goes to the bowler as well in bowling in the right area.”The wicket took Sarwate’s season’s tally to 47. In Vidarbha’s semi-final win against Kerala, which was wrapped up inside two days, Sarwate didn’t get to bowl a single ball, with Umesh and his fellow pacers cleaning up the opposition. Back at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur with its spin-friendly pitch, Sarwate may have just bowled the most significant 10 balls of the game.

Marnus Labuschagne pens Glamorgan deal ahead of Ashes push

He has been signed as cover for Shaun Marsh who is expected to be part of the World Cup squad but that is not yet certain

Marnus Labuschagne has become the latest Australian to take up a county deal having signed for Glamorgan for the first half of the English season.Labuschagne will act as cover for Shaun Marsh although it is not yet certain whether Marsh will be part of the World Cup squad with the Australia selectors needing to make some tough decisions with the availability of David Warner and Steven Smith.Labuschagne made his Test debut against Pakistan in the UAE and was then recalled for the final match against India in Sydney where he was surprisingly given the No. 3 role. He moved down to No. 4 against Sri Lanka where he made his maiden Test fifty in Brisbane before a double failure in Canberra and he will be sweating on his place in the Ashes squad.”I’ve always wanted to play county cricket and test myself in different conditions and a new environment, so I’m delighted to sign for Glamorgan,” Labuschagne said. “I understand it was a difficult season last year for the club, but hopefully I can hit the ground running and put in some good performances to get us off to a winning start.””I’ve heard great things about the club from a few of the players I already know and I’m really looking forward to teaming up with my new teammates, including Charlie [Hemphrey], who I’ve played with at Queensland over the last few seasons. It would be wonderful to make a genuine difference to the club both on and off the field.”Glamorgan’s director of cricket, Mark Wallace, said: “We’ve made it a priority to bring in overseas cover for Shaun Marsh, and to get a player of Marnus’ quality for the first half of the season is a great boost to the squad.”He’s a young, talented, driven cricketer who has shown his quality in both domestic and international cricket and is exactly the type of character we want in the dressing room. He’s also a multi-dimensional player who can bat at the top of the order, take important wickets with his leg-spin and lead in the field.”

Newcastle could unlock Isak by signing "unstoppable" £20m Almiron upgrade

Eddie Howe is at the nadir of his time at Newcastle United. In the face of an injury crisis, the Magpies continued plugging away and were scraping massive victories against the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

However, injuries and exhaustion, compounded by a relentless schedule have caused Newcastle to free-fall down the Premier League table, with a worrying number of key players underperforming in the famous black and white shirt.

Nevertheless, the January transfer window offers Howe the chance to strengthen his squad and the manager is reportedly eyeing up a move for a prolific attacker from the division below.

The outlet are claiming that the Magpies will have a bigger budget this month than many anticipated and the Dutch winger is seen as an affordable option for Howe’s side.

Summerville is having an extraordinary season at Elland Road. Prior to the 2023/24 campaign, the attacker had made 40 appearances for Leeds in all competitions, scoring four goals and recording two assists, earning praise from Statman Dave who called the Whites' winger "unstoppable".

This season, the 22-year-old has reached an entirely new level, bagging 12 goals and registering six assists in 24 games for the Yorkshire club.

However, having signed a four-year deal back in 2022, Summerville is said to have a release clause of merely £20m, making him an exciting prospect for a side like Newcastle in the transfer market who will be circling the player like a shark.

Crysencio Summerville’s stats this season

One of the biggest issues Newcastle have faced in recent weeks is an inability to create chances for star striker Alexander Isak. The Sweden international is the side’s top scorer this season, with 11 goals in 21 appearances. Unfortunately, the centre-forward has converted just two opportunities across his last ten league appearances.

The problem for Newcastle isn’t that Isak has been missing clear-cut opportunities. The Swede has averaged 0.78 goals per 90 from an xG of 0.79 per 90 and so has been quite clinical in front of goal. The issue has been how many chances the 24-year-old is being handed by those around him.

Miguel Almiron has been one of the key reasons behind Newcastle's issues up top in recent weeks. The Paraguay international has failed to record a single assist in his last ten outings for the Geordie outfit. Throughout the entire season, Almiron has managed to produce just one assist in 29 appearances in all competitions which is worrying for Howe.

Isak needs a player who is capable of putting the ball on a silver plate for him regularly. Almiron has proved this season that he isn't the man who can do this consistently. However, Summerville may just be the perfect fit and is outperforming Newcastle's number 24 in several key metrics in the 2023/24 campaign.

Summerville is a clear upgrade on Almiron. The latter has played 164 times for Newcastle since joining the club back in 2019 and has registered 29 goal contributions. Summerville has 18 goal contributions already since the beginning of this season.

Given his release clause is quite cheap, Howe could miss a massive opportunity to add some real quality to his ranks by not signing Summerville before the deadline passes.
