Same agent as Fraser: Southampton closely monitoring £33k-p/w “machine"

Southampton are closely monitoring the situation of a new, prolific attacker, with a fresh report revealing that he could potentially join the club on loan in January.

Southampton's top goalscorers

Adam Armstrong is currently Saints' top scorer in the Championship, sitting pretty with eight strikes in 15 appearances, but no other centre-forward at the club has managed more than three goals so far this season.

Russell Martin has Samuel Edozie and Ryan Fraser as his two options out wide on the left wing meawhile, but there’s a strong possibility that the latter could be set to depart at the end of the current campaign. The Saints attacker is only on a season-long loan from Newcastle United, meaning that he will return to his parent club should the opportunity to buy him on a permanent basis not arrive, though that doesn't seem to have stopped the boss from wanting to enter the market to search for another temporary addition.

Despite only joining over the summer from Championship side Blackburn, Villarreal’s Ben Brereton Diaz has emerged as a potential candidate having been extremely limited to game time since putting pen to paper on his exciting move to Spain.

The Chile international has made just two starts and six substitute appearances so far this season in La Liga (WhoScored – Brereton Diaz statistics), showing how low down in the pecking order he is, and if the following update is to be believed, the 24-year-old has been told he is free to leave temporarily to get more minutes under his belt.

Southampton interested in Ben Brereton Diaz

According to TEAMtalk, Southampton are keen on Ben Brereton Diaz, but they are set to face stiff competition with four other clubs also hoping to secure his services.

TEAMtalk can exclusively reveal that a number of clubs are tracking Brereton Diaz, with Villarreal willing to sanction a loan move for him in January. We understand that amongst those keen are Premier League clubs Crystal Palace and Burnley.

"Crystal Palace and Burnley are not alone in their interest, however, with Championship sides Leicester, Southampton and West Brom also understood to be keeping tabs on the former Blackburn man.”

Villarreal forwardBen Brereton Diaz.

Ben Brereton Diaz's goalscoring record

During his time at Blackburn Rovers, Brereton Diaz racked up 63 contributions, 47 goals and 16 assists, in 177 senior appearances (Transfermarkt – Brereton Diaz statistics), with his prolific form in the final third having previously seen him dubbed a “goal machine” by reliable journalist Alan Nixon.

Juan Jose Rojo Martin’s £33k-per-week earner (Villarreal salaries), also recorded a total of 106 shots over the course of last season which was more than any of his fellow teammates (FBRef – Blackburn statistics), highlighting his constant desire to hit the back of the net even if the end product wasn't always there.

Ben Brereton Diaz's Style Of Play

Likes to cut inside

Likes to dribble

Counter attack threat

Does not dive into tackles (Data via WhoScored)

Additionally, Brereton Diaz shares the same representative, Wasserman, as Fraser, Ryan Manning, James Bree and Flynn Downes (Southampton agents), so this existing connection that his management already have to the club could give the board a small advantage over their competitors should they decide to pursue a deal in January.

Khawaja drops seven kilos "since South Africa" in fitness bid

Usman Khawaja has gotten leaner and fitter in the past few months as he looks to get into the best physical shape ahead of Australia’s tour of the UAE later this year

Usman Khawaja says he’s lost up to seven kilos since Australia’s ill-fated tour of South Africa to get into the best fitness of his life ahead of the next stage of his career. Khawaja, 31, has only played 33 Tests since making his debut to much fanfare in 2011, and even though he has been more of a regular over the past three years, he doesn’t want to leave anything to chance.”I wanted to get fitter, lose a bit of weight and keep my strength,” Khawaja told . “I’d found it a bit difficult in the past few years, especially after coming back from my [knee reconstruction], to get in the work. It’s always hard coming back from a major injury and it’s only the last 12 months I’ve felt in a good place again, ready to go a bit harder.”The last few months have seen a clearing out in Australian cricket, with three players with whom Khawaja would normally be jostling for places – Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft – banned for up to a year for the ball-tampering controversy that marred the tour of South Africa in April. There’s also a new coach in charge, with Darren Lehmann having left to be replaced by Justin Langer, and though Khawaja wasn’t selected for the ODI tour of England – Langer’s first assignment in charge of the national team – he feels confident about making the squad to play against Pakistan in the UAE later this year.”We had long conversations,” Khawaja said. “He knew I was disappointed. We had some really good chats. I know the expectations, and I know where I stand.”So Khawaja’s gone back to what he can control – his own fitness – and as far as that goes, he feels he’s getting better results than he’s ever previously had. “I’ve dropped seven kilos since South Africa – I’m down to 77kg. I got just about 7:30 in my 2km time trial, which is a personal best. I did jump testing the other day and I jumped higher than I have before. So all the markers have been better than I’ve had for at least the last five years.”I did it all on my own pretty much. I had a month-and-a-half on my own (after South Africa) just doing fitness stuff, going to the gym. I had a space downstairs where I’ve set up my own gym now, I invested some money in that and it’s great. I can just walk downstairs now, do what I want to do.”Khawaja is part of an Australia A tour of India, which is effectively an audition ahead of the Pakistan tour. Asia has not been a happy hunting ground for Khawaja, with the left-hander averaging just 14.62 from nine innings in the region. Walking into a team where he played a Test before any of the current Australian squad, he will need to bear a greater share of the responsibility if Australia are to overturn what has been a wretched recent record away to subcontinental sides. But it isn’t just in physique where Khawaja feels he is lighter than ever; he’s not placing too much psychological pressure on himself either. After having let the pressure get to him a number of times in the past, he’s not obsessing over how the next few months’ work out.”You do have to enjoy what you’re doing. I remember working my arse off before the 2013 Ashes and I went there and only scored one fifty and didn’t play well, and got dropped. But I probably wasn’t in a good space (mentally); if you’re doing fitness work, you’re starving yourself and you’re in a bad headspace, then I don’t reckon you’re going to score runs – no matter how fit you get.”But this is the first time I haven’t really given a crap about what anyone else thinks – I’m doing this for myself, trying to be the best version of myself, and I’ve been enjoying it. Hopefully I can go out there and do really well in the ‘A’ stuff and the rest will take care of itself. But if I don’t, I know it’s not the end of the world.”He isn’t looking too closely at all that’s changed around him in the wake of the Newlands ball-tampering scandal, which saw three key players get hit with long bans and the coach resign.”JL (Langer) is my fifth coach of Australia now [after Tim Nielsen, stand-in Troy Cooley, Mickey Arthur and Darren Lehmann]. I’ve been through it all, I’ve seen a lot of different coaches, and I’ve been in and out of the team a lot – especially in my younger years. I’ve learnt to just realise there are some things you can’t control.”What he can control, though, he appears to have been doing very well indeed lately.

Arron Lilley helps Leicestershire cope with Ben Raine departure

Former Lancashire allrounder Arron Lilley has signed a two-year contract with Leicestershire

Arron Lilley has joined Leicestershire on a two-year-contract. Lilley, an offspinning allrounder, was released by Lancashire at the end of the season and joins seamers Chris Wright, from Warwickshire, and Will Davis, from Derbyshire, in signing for Leicestershire.Lilley developed through the Lancashire system and has a decent record in all forms of the game. Due to Lancashire’s strength in spin bowling, however, he struggled for opportunities – he has played only one first-class and one List A match in the previous two seasons – and saw most of his appearances come in T20 cricket, where he has batted in the top-order and sometimes opened the bowling. He was a member of the Lancashire side that won the T20 Blast in 2015 and will join left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson, who also developed through the Lancashire Academy, at Leicestershire. The club hopes the signing of Lilley will go some way to filling the chasm left by the departure of Ben Raine, who has returned to Durham. Zak Chappell has also left, signing for Nottinghamshire, while Ned Eckersley, Richard Jones, Tom Wells, Mark Pettini and Rob Sayer were released at the end of the season. The club have also been in a long-running dispute with Michael Carberry, who has not played since he was deposed as captain in May. It seems most unlikely he will return.Leicestershire also confirmed last week that Pakistan seamer Mohammad Abbas, who had an outstanding 2018 season, will be returning next year.”Arron will add great value to our side,” Leicestershire’s head coach, Paul Nixon, said. “He is a three-dimensional cricketer who will be valuable in all formats. Lancashire are renowned for producing high-class spinners, and he wants to compete for a place in all three competitions.”Arron also has a very good white-ball record and will add to our plans nicely. Arron is a hard-hitting batsman, fine off-spinner and tremendous fielder, and we’re delighted to have him on board for the 2019 season.”Lilley said: “I am delighted to be joining up with Paul Nixon and the squad. I am keen to develop my game in all three formats and am confident that Grace Road is the best place for me to do that. I can’t wait to get started.”

How Sunderland’s dream starting XI may look after signing 3 new players in Jan

Sunderland have experienced an up-and-down start to the Championship season under Black Cats boss Tony Mowbray.

Exciting and exhilarating performances are often sandwiched alongside crushing defeats with the squad then back to square one – a notable example of that being the demoralising 4-0 defeat to local rivals Middlesbrough at the Stadium of Light in mid-October, with Sunderland's next home match after that being a convincing 3-1 win over Norwich City to get fans back on side.

Mowbray will hope he can strengthen his starting eleven this January to get a few new faces and bodies into the building to help his side really cement a playoff spot, the Black Cats hanging onto sixth place currently on goal difference.

Here's what a predicted Sunderland XI could look like after the upcoming transfer window…

1 GK – Anthony Patterson

Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.

Subject to significant Premier League interest in the summer – with Wolverhampton Wanderers apparently interested in the 23-year-old at one point – everyone at Sunderland will have breathed a collective sigh of relief when their reliable shot-stopper signed a new deal to prolong his stay at the Stadium of Light this September.

Patterson's recent display away at Swansea was crucial, saving a penalty on the stroke of half-time to keep hold of a clean sheet and ensure Sunderland picked up a point in a 0-0 stalemate.

2 RB – Trai Hume

Only missing 18 minutes of Championship football this season, Hume is a shoo-in to stay firmly in Mowbray's first-team plans and for good reason.

Amassing an average 7.17 rating via Sofascore in the second tier, the 21-year-old is a standout performer for his side – recovering 6.2 balls on average each game this season as a tireless full-back option.

3 CB – Luke O'Nien

Having to play reserve centre-backs recently against Wayne Rooney's Birmingham due to piling injury concerns, Mowbray will hope that Sunderland centre-back and commander Luke O'Nien is back to full sharpness soon.

Looking at FBRef, it's a no-brainer that he slots into the heart of defence for the Black Cats when fit – his aggression is key with 1.64 tackles per 90 minutes attempted over the last year.

4 CB – Nathaniel Adjei

The first of three potential new transfers into the Stadium of Light, Hammarby prospect Nathaniel Adjei is being lined up for a move to English football with Michael Carrick's Middlesbrough also keen on the Ghanaian defender.

In a recent Allsvenskan encounter versus IFK Värnamo, the lofty centre-back was crucial in ensuring his team kept a clean sheet in a drab 0-0 game – winning five of his seven ground duels as per Sofascore, resilient in his defensive efforts.

Sunderland need more numbers defensively, with Adjei looking like a target worth pursuing.

5 LB – Niall Huggins

The former Leeds United turned Sunderland first-team man should retain his spot at full-back even with possible reinforcements coming in, Huggins performing competently up against Birmingham City last time out in league action.

Huggins even had two shots of his own blocked per Sofascore, joining in with waves of Sunderland attacking pressure from down the flanks.

6 CDM – Pierre Ekwah

Sunderland midfielder Pierre Ekwah.

Operating in a 4-1-4-1 formation, Ekwah is the usual defensive anchor fielded for the Black Cats.

The 21-year-old can also pop up with a goal here and there from his holding role, netting twice against Southampton in a barnstorming 5-0 triumph over Russell Martin's Saints earlier in the season.

7 RM – Patrick Roberts

Sunderland winger Patrick Roberts.

The ex Manchester City man has found a home in Sunderland over the last few seasons, excelling with the Durham-based club now after playing in the likes of Spain and Scotland before sealing a move to the Stadium of Light.

Starting 11 games for the Black Cats this season, the goals and assists haven't been flowing – just one assist with zero goals to his name – but his flair and trickery from down the channels is a useful calling card for Mowbray's men.

8 CM – Dan Neil

At the club since emerging as a top talent through the U18 ranks, Neil is now a seasoned first-team presence at Sunderland despite still only being 21.

Registering three goals and two assists from 15 Championship appearances to date, the South Shields-born man even wore the captain's armband for his boyhood club against Wayne Rooney's Blues last match.

9 CM – Jobe Bellingham

Brother of Real Madrid sensation Jude Bellingham, Jobe is a star in his own right now with Sunderland after leaving boyhood club Birmingham behind this summer for a fresh challenge.

It helps that Sunderland and Mowbray give youngsters opportunities to impress, Sunderland's number 7 sticking out last match against his former employers – scoring his third Black Cats goal in the resounding 3-1 win since relocating from St Andrews.

10 LM – Amad Diallo

Amad Diallo for Sunderland

Sunderland look to be facing a losing battle to keep star winger Jack Clarke at the club, Brentford interested in the 22-year-old allegedly after an electric 17 games this season for the midfielder already – scoring nine times and assisting a further goal.

The Black Cats hierarchy could appease this potential sale by bringing back Amad Diallo on loan to the Stadium of Light, the Manchester United attacker a resounding hit last time with the Sunderland faithful with 16 goal contributions in total for Mowbray's playoff challengers during the 2022-23 campaign.

Not traditionally a left winger, Diallo can slot into this position if called upon and his theoretical addition back to the group could be the perfect Clarke replacement.

Dream Celtic XI after January window including "incredible" 5 ft 9 magician

The January transfer window is just over five weeks away from opening for business and Celtic could make further additions to their squad ahead of the second half of the campaign.

Brendan Rodgers made nine new signings over the summer after his return to Parkhead but the winter market presents him with a chance to bring in more recruits.

With this in mind, here is how his Hoops XI could look from February onwards if the Scottish giants enjoy a dream month of business at the start of 2024…

1 Andriy Lunin

Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

Starting off between the sticks, veteran shot-stopper Joe Hart could be ditched from the starting line-up in favour of a new goalkeeper – Andriy Lunin.

The Daily Record reported in October that the Real Madrid titan is on their radar ahead of January as they eye up a long-term heir to the former England international, who is out of contract next summer.

Since the start of the 2018/19 campaign, Lunin has prevented six more goals than the average goalkeeper would be expected to concede based on the post-shot xG value of the efforts against him at league level.

Whereas, Hart has let in a staggering 7.4 more than expected across European competitions since the start of the 2020/21 campaign, which suggests that he has undeperformed in goal in comparison to Lunin's overperformance as a shot-stopper.

This is why the Real Madrid colossus could come in to take the English goalkeeper's place as the number one at Parkhead.

2 Alistair Johnston

Celtic defender Alistair Johnston.

The Canada international has been a solid performer down the right flank for the Scottish giants this season and there is no need for him to be replaced.

Alistair Johnston has started ten Premiership matches this term and contributed with two 'big chances' created and 1.3 key passes per game, along with 2.2 tackles and interceptions per outing, in that time.

3 Cameron Carter-Vickers

Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers.

At the heart of the defence, Cameron Carter-Vickers has been an impressive titan for Celtic since his move from Tottenham Hotspur, initially on loan, in 2021 and he should still be leading the backline in 2024.

The USA international has been an incredibly dominant figure for the Hoops this term with a duel success rate of 78% in the Premiership, which shows that opposition forwards find it very difficult to beat him in physical contests.

4 Liam Scales

Celtic defender Liam Scales.

The Irish colossus spent last season on loan with Aberdeen in the Premiership and used the experience of playing regular in the Scottish top-flight to come back and establish himself as a regular for the Bhoys.

Liam Scales has started 12 league matches under Rodgers this term and the 25-year-old ace, who has completed 89% of his attempted passes, is a natural left-footer who can play out from the back effectively on that side.

5 Quentin Merlin

Nantes defender Quentin Merlin.

At left-back, reported summer transfer target Quentin Merlin could be a dream signing to bolster Rodgers' side in place of Scotland international Greg Taylor.

Since the start of last season, the Scottish dynamo has racked up five assists and five 'big chances' created in 41 league starts for the Hoops.

Whereas, Merlin has managed three assists and nine 'big chances' created in 34 Ligue 1 starts for Nantes. This suggests that the 21-year-old talent is able to create high-quality opportunities for his teammates more frequently from left-back in comparison to Taylor.

Therefore, the France U21 international, who assisted two goals in two matches for his country last month, could be an exciting signing to add some attacking quality to that side.

6 Callum McGregor

Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor.

The current Hoops skipper should not be in any danger of losing his position in the side any time soon as he has enjoyed a solid start to the campaign.

Callum McGregor has been a super reliable option in possession for Rodgers in the middle of the park with his 92% pass accuracy currently topping the squad out of all midfielders and attacking players.

7 Matt O'Riley

Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley.

The Denmark U21 international should be a nailed-on start if Celtic are able to keep hold of him beyond the January transfer window, after Leeds had a bid rejected for him earlier this year.

Matt O'Riley has scored six goals and produced five assists in 13 Premiership appearances so far this season, and no Hoops player has managed more than him in either statistic.

8 Reo Hatate

Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate.

To complete the midfield, with no new signings to take a starting XI place, is Reo Hatate, who could remain an influential figure for the Northern Irish head coach.

The Japan international has produced two goals and two assists in seven league appearances for the Bhoys so far this season, after a return of six goals and eight assists in 32 top-flight outings last term.

9 Jota

Another dream signing Celtic could make is a swoop to bring Portuguese winger Jota back to Parkhead after his £25m move to Al Ittihad over the summer.

The 5 foot 9 whiz, who ex-Scotland full-back Alan Hutton once hailed as "incredible", has failed to make his new side's domestic squad list and the Hoops, alongside Tottenham and Newcastle, are reportedly in the running to land him in January.

Jota produced an outstanding 11 goals and 11 assists in 33 Premiership appearances last season for the Hoops before his big-money move to Saudi Arabia.

The 24-year-old magician has already proven himself in Scottish football, as shown by his sublime form during the 2022/23 campaign, and could, therefore, hit the ground running upon a return to Paradise.

10 Kyogo Furuhashi

Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi.

Starting as the first-choice number nine, Kyogo Furuhashi should still be leading the line for the Hoops come the end of the January transfer window.

Brentford and Union Berlin have both been credited with an interest in the Japan international, who is valued at £20m by his club, but Rodgers will be able to keep hold of the talented marksman in a dream scenario.

Sri Lanka hit with five penalty runs after one-short incident

Roshen penalised after apparent failure to ground bat while turning for second run

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Pallekele15-Nov-2018

Roshen Silva puts in a dive•AFP

Sri Lanka were docked five penalty runs in the third session of the second day at Pallekele, following a strange interpretation of the law governing deliberate short runs by the umpires. Here’s what happened: Roshen Silva was batting alongside Akila Dananjaya, when Roshen cut Jack Leach fine of Moeen Ali at short third man. Although there was an easy two for the taking, both batsmen assumed that the ball would reach the boundary, and ambled to the other end, while they watched Moeen chase the ball down. Moeen caught up with the slowing ball, however, and reeled it in centimetres short of the boundary, sliding along the ground and scooping the ball back into play. Upon realising that a four had been prevented, the batsmen – who had crossed and were now at opposite ends of the pitch – decided to cross back, only sauntering as they did, because Moeen’s momentum had taken him over the boundary line, and he was in no position to fire in a quick return throw. Dananjaya did, by the way, ground his bat at the striker’s end and return for the second in the regular fashion.Where the umpires took issue with the batsmen, however, was that Roshen did not ground his bat at the non-strikers’ end. He had been watching the ball and Moeen, and had seemingly neglected to ensure he completed the run. Here is where the five penalty runs comes in. Law 18.5.1 states that:“If either umpire considers that one or both batsmen deliberately ran short at that umpire’s end, the umpire concerned shall, when the ball is dead, call and signal Short run and inform the other umpire of what has occurred and apply [five penalty runs].”The primary reason for deliberately running a short run – I.e. crossing in the middle of the pitch, then crossing back without touching down, is to ensure the senior batsman in the partnership retains the strike, perhaps in a situation where the batsmen realise it is not possible to complete two runs in their entirety. Here, however, Roshen was so close to the non-strikers when Moeen stopped the ball, that he could have virtually reached over and grounded his bat. The fact that he didn’t appears more the result of an oversight on his part – perhaps he thought he had already completed the first run. In any case, there was no pressure to scamper back for the second. The batsmen jogged it and made it back to their original creases in plenty of time.It is also important to note that at no point during this pair’s 56-run partnership did either batsman turn down a single in order to manipulate the strike. They batted normally, in other words. The umpires though, have ruled the short run intentional. England had five runs added to their first-innings total as a result, taking their score to 290.”I don’t think Roshen did it deliberately,” said Dimuth Karunaratne at the close. “He thought the ball had gone for four so he came back to his partner to give a high five. Those things can happen. It’s part of the game, we don’t blame him. We are not so worried about the five runs.”
