Karnataka have appointed two former batsmen from the state to lead the support staff for the coming season
ESPNcricinfo staff29-Apr-2017Former Karnataka batsmen PV Shashikanth and GK Anil Kumar have been appointed the state team’s coach and assistant coach respectively. The duo replaces the highly successful combine of J Arunkumar and Mansur Ali Khan.Shashikanth played 51 first-class games and scored 2397 runs at an average of 31.53, including four hundreds, before retiring in 1999. A former captain, Shashikanth also led a depleted Karnataka side to an Irani Cup title in 1996-97. The 43-year-old Anil Kumar, on the other hand, played five first-class games in a career spanning from 1998-99 to 2000-01. In 2014, he turned out for the Rockstars side in the Karnataka Premier League. The KSCA said their appointments were “unanimous decisions” of the board’s managing committee.”They (Shashikanth and Anil Kumar) have been coaches of various age groups of the state for more than a decade,” KSCA said in a release on April 26. “The KSCA also acknowledges the contribution of the former coaches Mr J Arun Kumar and Mansoor Ali Khan for their stint as coaches of the senior state team for the last five seasons.”Currently involved in the IPL as Kings XI Punjab’s batting coach, Arunkumar is one of the most successful coaches in the domestic arena. While he was eventually elevated as head coach, he and Mansoor were initially appointed as batting and bowling coaches respectively in July 2012 to replace K Jeshwanth. The duo did not have to wait long to taste success, as Karnataka bagged the treble of domestic titles – Ranji Trophy, Irani Cup and Vijay Hazare Trophy – in 2013-14 before repeating it the following season. In 2015-16, however, Maharashtra snapped Karnataka’s three-year unbeaten run as the defending champions failed to make the knockouts of the Ranji Trophy. Karnataka made the quarter-finals in the 2016-17 season before losing to Tamil Nadu, and finished on top of the Inter-State T20 League’s south zone table.
It has been a summer of change for Glasgow Rangers since the end of the 2022/23 campaign as a number of players have either joined or departed Ibrox.
Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos, Scott Arfield, and Allan McGregor were some of the first-team stars who left upon the expiry of their contracts, whilst loanee Malik Tillman also returned to Bayern Munich.
Head coach Michael Beale has, however, been able to bring in seven signings; including Leon Balogun, Kieran Dowell, Abdallah Sima, Jack Butland, Dujon Sterling, Cyriel Dessers, and Sam Lammers.
The business is not done there, though, as The Scottish Sun recently reported that the 42-year-old tactician is hoping to make further changes to the roster, with more ins and outs on the table.
Beale must now secure a deal to sign Sunderland sensation Jack Clarke this summer, who has been linked with a switch to Glasgow.
How good is Jack Clarke?
The £15k-per-week winger's form throughout the 2022/23 Championship campaign for the Black Cats suggests that he is an excellent forward who could help the head coach to finally unlock left-back Ridvan Yilmaz.
Last summer's signing from Besiktas missed 29 competitive matches through injury last term, which meant that he was restricted to just eight Scottish Premiership starts.
Yilmaz was unable to showcase the best of his attacking talents as the 22-year-old gem registered two assists in that time.
That came after the left-footed maestro produced three goals and four assists in 23 league starts for Besiktas in the previous campaign – a contribution every 3.29 starts on average, in comparison to one every four times for Rangers.
Rangers stars Fashion Sakala and Ridvan Yilmaz.
The Turkey international has the potential to provide an excellent attacking threat from left-back as no Gers defender managed more than two league goals last season.
Clarke's arrival could play a crucial role in that as his quality at the top end of the pitch could draw attention away from Yilmaz, which would allow the full-back to bomb on down the flank to cause chaos of his own.
The Sunderland wizard made a huge impact on a consistent basis last season as the ex-Tottenham Hotspur prospect racked up nine goals and 12 assists across 46 Championship starts.
Meanwhile, no Rangers player provided more than nine league assists and Kent, who the 5 foot 11 magician could come in as a replacement for on the left wing, only found the back of the net on three occasions.
These statistics suggest that Clarke, whose dribbling ability was heralded as "effortless" by former Premier League forward Noel Whelan, could be an outstanding attacking threat for Beale out wide.
If he can translate his Championship form over to Scotland then opposition defences would have to be wary of his talents, particularly when cutting inside onto his favoured right foot – unlike with Kent as the former Liverpool whiz struggled in front of goal.
This could draw defenders in to stop him from being able to unleash a shot from a central area, which could open up the space down the left flank for him to reverse passes to Yilmaz.
The Turkish dynamo could then use the quality he showcased during his time with Bestikas to make the most of those opportunities and finally kickstart his Gers career.
Everton may miss out on striker target El Bilal Toure due to tight finances according to Paul Brown.
The club had an offer rejected by Almeria, with the Spanish side wanting the player's release clause met.
Will Everton sign El Bilal Toure?
The Toffees are very interested in signing the Mali international, but face competition from top European sides.
According to reports from Spain, Everton's opening bid was rejected by the Andalusian club, with the side holding out for the players €40m (£34.3m) release clause. The Merseyside clubs opening bid was in the region of €30m to €35m (£25.7m to £30m), however, according to The Daily Mail, that deal was structured as a loan with an obligation to buy rather than an outright sale.
UD Almeria forward El Bilal Toure.
It remains to be seen whether the club will push forward with another bid, with reports recently surfacing that the club are interested in Leeds United forward Wilfred Gnonto, and had seen a £15m bid rejected for the young Italian, with Leeds not wanting to sell the forward whose contract doesn't contain a relegation release clause. However, should the Toffees manage to secure a deal for the youngster who was a bright spark in a disappointing Leeds team, any potential move for Toure could be impossible due to budget restrictions.
Everton also face competition from Italian side Atalanta for the Mali international, with a report stating that the club had already submitted a €25m (£21.5m) offer for the 21-year-old who has only spent one season with Almeria. A factor that could swing the direction of this deal is the ongoing talks between the Bergamo side and Manchester United for current striker Rasmus Hojlund. Should the Danish forward join the Red Devils this summer, that could provide the funds Atlanta need to activate Toure's release clause, which Everton may not be able to match.
Speaking to FootballFanCast, journalist Brown suggested that there may not be much "wiggle room" for Everton in terms of submitting an improved offer due to financial constraints, and that should a deal be completed, it would have to be done for below the players release fee.
What did Paul Brown say about El Bilal Toure to Everton?
When asked about the current situation between all parties, Paul Brown stated: "Yeah, I think Toure's club know what Everton are willing to pay for him and how they're willing to pay for it. I'm not sure if there's much wiggle room really because of Everton's finances to go back in with a much better offer, so I don't think it's one that's going to get done anytime soon because I don't think his club are entirely happy with the bid that Everton made. Also, he's he's got a release clause that Everton don't intend to trigger. So it would have to be a deal that's done below that price."
Would El Bilal Toure be a good signing for Everton?
Toure could be the solution to a real problem that is surfacing at Everton.
The club are currently in the midst of a striker crisis. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has spent the last two campaigns hampered by injuries, with the forward missing 30 games due to three separate injuries across the last two seasons. When he has played, he has struggled to reach the heights he managed under the management of Carlo Ancelotti, scoring only seven goals across 36 games in all competitions since the beginning of the 2021/22 season.
neal-maupay-everton-premier-league
Neal Maupay's move from Brighton has been a disappointing one, with £15m striker managing just one league goal last season. The forward could reportedly depart Goodison Park after one campaign, with Italian side Salernitana hoping to reignite their interest in the 26-year-old. Young Ellis Simms, who scored a memorable last-minute equaliser for the Blues last season at Stamford Bridge has already departed, joining Championship side Coventry City in a deal worth potentially £8m.
Toure meanwhile enjoyed a breakout campaign in La Liga last season, managing seven goals and two assists in just 21 matches. He is also proven on the international level despite his young age, managing five goals in 15 games for Mali. Last summer, Everton were interested in the forward when he was still at Reims, with him being labeled as a "major talent" a year ago, and a strong opening campaign in Spain has only strengthened that belief.
Eoin Morgan is an England captain who senses his time has come. He has reshaped England’s limited-overs cricket, now he wants some tangible reward for it

Eoin Morgan is an England captain who senses his time has come. He has reshaped England’s limited-overs cricket, now he wants some tangible reward for it. As the Champions Trophy looms, he is in mint form as his 11th ODI hundred in front of a near-capacity Headingley crowd testified.Morgan’s 107 from 93 balls was a central component of a victory that put England 1-0 up in the three-match series. He fell 14 balls from the end of the innings, advancing to Chris Morris, the most resilient member of South Africa’s attack, and skying to mid-off. Along the way, he became the highest ODI run-getter of any batsman who has played for England, although that statistic is swollen by the 700-plus runs he made in an Ireland shirt. Ian Bell holds the record – as silky-smooth as he can be, already he feels like a batsman from another age.South Africa, No. 1 in the ODI rankings, will provide an ideal pre-tournament workout for England, the hosts, ahead of the Champions Trophy. Morgan’s third ODI hundred in eight hits, following two gained in the winter in Cuttack and North Sound, underlined that his game is in far better order than it was a year ago when his invigoration of England’s one-day approach was not matched by his own form.South Africa fined for slow over rate
AB de Villiers’ side have been fined for maintaining a slow over rate during their loss to England in the first ODl at Headingley. South Africa were found to be one over short, after time allowances were taken into consideration by Andy Pycroft, the match referee, based on the charge laid by on-field umpires Tim Robinson and Rod Tucker, third umpire Chris Gaffaney and fourth official Michael Gough. De Villiers accepted the charge and was fined 20% of his match fee, while the other South Africa players were fined 10%.
Even with Morgan’s intervention, backed up by an inspired late assault by Moeen Ali which was enough to win him the man-of-the-match award on his return to the side, England had not quite put the game beyond South Africa at the interval. It was a record ODI score at Headingley, but it was a bountiful batting surface and, as evening approached, the day remained warm and the skies remained milky blue.Nevertheless, England gradually imposed themselves in the field to secure a 72-run win. The luxury of that margin had seemed highly unlikely when South Africa were 145 for 1 approaching midway. With the Manchester terrorist atrocity still so fresh in the mind, it was a pleasure to find Headingley carrying on regardless. The additional security was unobtrusive and, after a sombre minute’s silence to start the day, and with both sides wearing black armbands, a crowd of more than 14,000 gradually slipped into contented mood. National security levels have been upgraded to Critical – the highest of the five categories, communicating the conclusion that another attack cannot be discounted – but there was no sense of a country under siege. There will be disquiet at the fact that Ben Stokes was off the field for a period with a sore left knee, and only bowled two overs, but Morgan played down the significance of that and suggested that he was just being risk-averse. Anyway, if you worried every time an England player was off the field, you would rarely have time to do anything else.Mark Wood has also had better nights. He touched 90mph at times, which is a good sign after his long-standing ankle problems, but too often he strained for rhythm, conceding 49 in his six overs. Hashim Amla pilfered five fours in two overs, easeful drives and pulls, and AB de Villiers looked equally commanding when Wood returned for a second spell. All that was in the context of South Africa reaching 145 for 1 shortly before midway. Quinton de Kock fell early – a good running catch by the wicketkeeper, Jos Buttler, when he top-edged Chris Woakes – but Amla and Faf du Plessis had countered in inconspicuous fashion in a stand of 112. Then Wood trapped Amla lbw with a straight one – England winning the decision on review – Liam Plunkett straightened one to have du Plessis caught at the wicket in the next over and England rallied with Woakes snapping up the last two wickets to claim 4 for 38.Self-destructive departures by JP Duminy and David Miller also played into England’s hands. Both received long hops, from Adil Rashid and Woakes respectively, which they hauled obligingly to deep forward square. Moeen Ali found some purchase with his offspin and collected de Villiers to add to his earlier thumping 77 off 51 balls.England’s innings had provided the entertainment and, before Morgan’s intervention, things were not quite so rosy. Stokes and Buttler were back from the IPL, their superstar status widely acknowledged, but there was no grand entrance as they returned to the England fold.Stokes, named as the IPL’s Most Valuable Player, as well as being the most expensive at $2.16m, looked in good order in making 25 from 30 balls before a meaty pull at a short ball from Kagiso Rabada picked out Morris at deep forward square. The boundary boards had been brought in at Headingley about five yards on that side of the ground, but that did not entirely prevent the conclusion – satisfying for local consumption – that they had clearly not been brought in as far as in IPL.Buttler did not quite make the same impact in the IPL as Stokes, and he fell for 7 two overs later. Morris was brought back for him and the manner in which he immediately dismissed him at short backward square spoke of a pre-conceived plan. After experiencing India’s febrile crowds, an ODI in England had a gentler feel for Stokes and Buttler. They must have felt as if they were returning to suburbia after the clamour of the city (English cricket always feels like suburbia, especially at Lord’s), the applause appreciative but not particularly noisy until Morgan and Moeen took hold in the closing overs. Politeness pervaded the scene.Jason Roy departed early, driving expansively at Wayne Parnell’s second ball to be caught at the wicket. By the time de Kock took his second catch, England had raised 100 at not far short of a run a ball. Alex Hales, who had worked the ball through the leg side confidently whenever given the opportunity, reached 61 before a lazy end against Andile Phehlukwayo’s first ball. He normally feasts on width outside off stump but made a hash of it.Joe Root lost impetus. The expectations of his home crowd were high in his first innings on this ground since his elevation to the Test captaincy. He got 17 off his first eight balls, but only 20 off his next 43 as Morris, not for the first time, restrained him best of all.But it was Phehlukwayo who claimed his wicket. A seam bowling allrounder whose first sport as a youngster was hockey, he has no great pace, so there was little venom in his wide bouncer, but it was high enough for Root to get in a tangle as he tried to pull it and lobbed it into the leg side.A partnership of 117 in 13 overs between Morgan and Moeen, who finished unbeaten on 77 with five sixes, replotted England’s course. Moeen’s contribution was also invaluable. He recovered from a careworn start by advancing to hit Parnell straight for six, and then clearing the ropes thrice more in an over from the legspinner Imran Tahir that cost 22. After the match, he said that England had dedicated the victory to all those who had suffered in the Manchester attack.

David Warner has admitted the top order batsmen were similarly out of rhythm in the early overs of a curtailed chase against New Zealand
Daniel Brettig04-Jun-2017As much as Australia’s bowlers were panned by Steven Smith for their looseness in the opening match against New Zealand that was ultimately wrecked by rain, the vice-captain David Warner admits the top order batsmen were similarly out of rhythm in the early overs of a curtailed chase. The early English summer will not always suit an Australian side heavy on pace and power but not always so adept at nuance, something demonstrated by how Warner, Aaron Finch and Moises Henriques made early exits in the face of diligent New Zealand bowling before showers enveloped Edgbaston.Ahead of a match against Bangladesh that Steven Smith’s men must now win to avoid early elimination, Warner said the batsmen needed to strike a better balance than the one seen in his wild swish at a wide ball. Finch and Henriques then mistimed catches in front of the wicket.”There were, I think, a few rushed overs there especially in the first 10 [overs]. We probably didn’t allow ourselves to actually pick off the ones and twos and play normal cricket shots,” Warner said. “We tried to heave it a bit too much and wait for the bad ball too much I think. And as we know with New Zealand how they are, they are very disciplined in their line and length. They made us play a different kind of way to how we usually play. And from my stance, me and Finchy, I think we were a little bit disappointing.”Warner said he and Finch had walked out to bat with a very aggressive mind-set, something that was then exploited by the discipline of New Zaland’s attack. The bowlers of other nations, most particularly Bangladesh and England, will have taken note.”Initially that was what me and Finchy were talking about, making the most of that seven overs [in a rain-shortened chase],” Warner said. “After the first two overs we knew it was going to be a little bit difficult.”We just knew that if you hit the right length on that wicket, the wicket would do its course. It would hold up a fraction. They bowled with a wobbly seam, we tried to swing the ball, when it didn’t swing we went straight to cross seam. On the flip side of that, when you are facing a wobbly seam it can do something.”But they just hit their right lengths and made us play the shots. So, credit to them. And we tried to hit the ball too hard. I tried to move around the crease a little bit but found myself in some situations probably trying to muscle the ball a little bit too much, and Finchy said that as well.”The early wickets brought Henriques to the crease at No. 4, ostensibly in place of the injured Mitchell Marsh, but ahead of not only Glenn Maxwell and Travis Head but also the unselected Chris Lynn and Marcus Stoinis. Warner pointed to Henriques’ strong recent IPL displays as evidence he deserved the chance.”Obviously Steve had the thought process that Mo has been batting well enough to bat in that role. I look at his IPL, and I played with him, he was hitting the ball unbelievably,” Warner said. “To give him credit, the last 12 to 18 months his technique has gotten very good and he’s had the capability and strong performances on the board for New South Wales to warrant that selection.”His one-day numbers have been fantastic in the Matador. He’s used to playing on wickets coming in when it is swinging. And credit to him, he’s been able to do that and lock that down for New South Wales, and he’s been given that opportunity by the selectors here and Steve to play at number four for us.”I think you saw a couple of those pull shots he played, he’s been working on that for a while as well. And his all-round game is fantastic at the moment so hopefully, he can keep continuing his success and hopefully not too many inside edges onto the pad.”
Tottenham Hotspur might have to start preparing for life without their main man, and yet the potential replacements being touted would go a long way towards easing fan worries.
What players are Tottenham Hotspur signing?
The latest regarding this search for a Harry Kane successor comes from French outlet Foot Mercato, who claim that, should the England captain depart north London, Eintracht Frankfurt's Randal Kolo Muani is one such option.
Ange Postecoglou is reportedly ready to move should the unthinkable happen, which has been made more likely given Bayern Munich remain undeterred by Spurs' apparent reluctance to sell, with a third bid is expected soon.
Having already welcomed James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario and Manor Solomon this summer, as well as turning Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro's loans into permanent deals, this window has already proved revolutionary for the new head coach.
However, the arrival of the French forward could be truly instrumental in ushering in this promising new era, which could begin without their star striker.
How good is Randal Kolo Muani?
Back in May, it was revealed that Daniel Levy had held talks with various data experts, in an effort to replicate the success currently enjoyed by the likes of Brighton and Hove Albion and Brentford, starring on relatively shoestring budgets.
The latter have been lauded for this 'Moneyball' approach, in which they offload their big assets for huge profits, and replace the output of one player with numerous cheaper ones. The sales of Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma, whilst painful at the time, paved the way for their eventual promotion from the Championship.
It could be argued that finally, fans are starting to see this kind of intelligence, which saw the Seagulls actually finish above Spurs last season, showcased in their own transfer strategy.
Although Richarlison endured a tough debut campaign in north London, it could be argued that by giving him the right environment to shine, which Kolo Muani would only encourage with his entrance, the combined efforts of these forwards could more than make up for the gaping vacancy Kane would leave.
richarlison-tottenham-hotspur
Last term, for a side that finished just seventh in the Bundesliga, the 24-year-old posted a mouth-watering 40 goal contributions (23 goals, 17 assists) across all competitions from both central striker and on the right wing.
He has swiftly grown to become one of the outstanding stars of German football, with Kylian Mbappe having even praised him as he burst onto the national scene too:
"He is a striker who offers different game options to our team. He is very complete and has an impressive volume of play."
To place the £45m-rated livewire, who also ranks in the top 3% for assists and the top 5% for successful take-ons per 90 when compared to other forwards across Europe, alongside their Brazilian marksman, it is clear to see how his arrival could be the catalyst that truly kickstarts a stuttering career.
Last campaign Richarlison scored just one Premier League goal all season, whilst the year before he notched ten with a further five assists for a struggling Everton side that narrowly avoided the drop.
In the right conditions, which Postecoglou will now seek to foster, the 26-year-old finisher could finally recapture that form that spurred Levy to spend £60m for his signature last summer.
Should they both hit the ground running in the coming term, which could be devoid of the man who scored 30 league goals just last year, then fans would at least have their pains eased through the combined exploits of these two lethal assets who could create for one another.

Krunal Pandya and Basil Thampi have been rewarded for their excellent form in the 2017 IPL with maiden call-ups to the India A one-day squad, which will tour South Africa
ESPNcricinfo staff29-Jun-20170:52
Quick Facts – Krunal Pandya
Allrounder Krunal Pandya and medium pacer Basil Thampi have earned maiden call-ups to the India A side, for the tour of South Africa starting next month. Both players have been included in the 16-man one-day squad.India A squads
Pandya and Thampi were in excellent form in the 2017 IPL in April-May. Thampi’s 11 wickets in his debut season were the second-highest for his team, Gujarat Lions, but it was more his ability to deliver yorkers that caught attention. Pandya established himself as an integral cog in the Mumbai Indians squad that lifted the IPL trophy for a third time, at one point being picked as the sole spinning option over Harbhajan Singh. He finished with 243 runs at 34.71 and struck them at 135.75 to go alongside 10 wickets and an economy rate of under seven.”The aim is not just to represent India for a couple of matches here and there but to play for as long as possible,” Krunal told . It would be a dream come true if I and Hardik [his brother who has already graduated to international cricket] can together play for India in the 2019 World Cup.”Hardik was ecstatic. He called me and said that ‘You are getting there’. Having already played for India, he has an insight about top-flight cricket and I always discuss with him to pick finer points. There can’t be a closer buddy than your own brother.”The squad will be captained by Manish Pandey, who has recovered from the side strain he suffered during the IPL, which kept him out of the Champions Trophy earlier this month. The 15-man squad for the four-day games has batsmen Hanuma Vihari and Sudip Chatterjee, and seamers Ankit Rajpoot and Mohammed Siraj, all of whom have never played first-class cricket for India A. Vihari had a fruitful 2016-17 Ranji Trophy season with Andhra, amassing 688 runs at 57.33, including a double-century. Siraj was Hyderabad’s highest wicket-taker in their run to the quarter-final with 41 scalps, while Rajpoot and Chatterjee also enjoyed good returns. Aniket Choudhary, the left-arm pacer from Rajasthan, who took four wickets in a tour game between India A and the visiting Bangladesh team last year, was also included. Karun Nair will lead the first-class team. The tour kicks off on July 26 with a triangular one-day series, also involving Australia A. India and South Africa will then play two four-day games in August, in Benoni and Potchefstroom.
