Phil Hay: Leeds Set To Interview ‘World-Class’ Manager

Leeds United seem to be honing in on the man to finally fill their dugout vacancy, with only a few key names left to choose from…

What's the latest on Daniel Farke to Leeds United?

That's according to journalist Phil Hay, who penned an article regarding the 49ers' search for a new manager.

As their first major move as the new owners of his huge establishment, there is understandable hesitation to potentially make an error. That could explain why it has been nearly three weeks since Sam Allardyce left his post and kickstarted this search which is yet to bear fruit.

Writing for The Athletic, he claimed that Daniel Farke is one of the names set to be interviewed, with his experience in the Championship vital alongside his status as a free agent.

Is Daniel Farke similar to Marcelo Bielsa?

Although three other candidates are also being sounded out, it could be argued that the German poses their best opportunity to gain an instant return to the Premier League, in a style that is closest to their last promotion legend, Marcelo Bielsa.

Having already masterminded two title victories in the Championship with Norwich City, only Scott Parker upon that aforementioned list can compare with the pedigree of the 46-year-old promotion specialist.

marcelo-bielsa-leeds-united

His 4-2-3-1 system is a huge part of that success, which prioritises a heavy metal football synonymous with many German coaches. He likes to push his players forward, risking leaving space in behind their defence with the confidence that, should they regain possession high up the pitch, they will then stand a better chance of scoring.

Such a philosophy, whilst likely not quite as drastic as his, does draw similarities with their old Argentine boss who helped mastermind their 2020 Championship title. It was one which caught the eye, but had its downsides. After all, they did ship 79 goals in the campaign where he was dismissed.

Farke's work, however, has caught the attention of his compatriot Jurgen Klopp, who went as far as to brand him a "world-class" manager.

When delving deeper into the German's time in a Championship setting, it is clear that he is the leading candidate for the role who will not only bring back consistent success but also that feel-good factor that accompanies such an exciting and all-action brand of football.

Across his 138 games whilst managing in the division, he boasts 71 wins and a points-per-match average of 1.82. This has even culminated in the scoring of 217 goals (via Transfermarkt), further emphasising the potency of such a style.

The hope will be that he can make Leeds' stay at this level a short one, and once again have fans excited to watch their team thrive rather than the struggles they endured in the top flight.

Aston Villa May Bring £57k p/w Ace To Villa Park This Summer

Aston Villa have been linked with Athletic Club attacker Nico Williams and journalist Dean Jones thinks that the Spaniard would be a 'good fit' under Villans boss Unai Emery.

What's the latest transfer news involving Nico Williams?

As per 90min, Aston Villa have opened discussions regarding a deal to bring Athletic Club forward Williams to Villa Park as Emery eyes an addition on the flank.

The report states that the £57k-a-week ace is 'very highly-rated' at the West Midlands based club and Arsenal, Manchester City and Newcastle United are also monitoring Williams' situation this window.

According to The Athletic, Real Madrid are also keen on Williams, who is believed to have a €50 million (£42 million) release clause in his present terms at Athletic Club.

Williams has one year left on his deal and has emerged as a target for Aston Villa following their failed pursuit of Marco Asensio earlier this summer, as per FootballTransfers.

Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho is another player of interest to Aston Villa as they look forward to Europa Conference League football next term.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jones thinks that Williams has a bright future, though may need to refine some parts of his game to reach the very top.

Jones told FFC: "In terms of Nico Williams who is another target, I really like Nico Williams, I think that I can understand why Emery would feel that he's a good fit for him personally.

"In terms of the Premier League, I would worry a little bit about how he would fit. I see a lot of him at Athletic Club and he's a really good talent. He's got a lot of skill, but his decision-making in the final third just often falls a bit flat."

Would Nico Williams be a good signing for Aston Villa?

Williams is a highly talented youngster – and has been hailed a "sensation" by some in the media – that could add an extra layer of exuberance to Aston Villa's attack under Emery should they capture him this summer.

In 2022/23, the Pamplona-born star notched an impressive nine goals and six assists in 43 appearances across all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

nico-williams-athletic-bilbao

FBRef detail that Williams was a key presence for Athletic Club this campaign in terms of chance provision and successfully completed 105 shot-creating actions in La Liga.

His ability to drive past his marker and make things happen has also caught the eye of clubs around Europe, evidenced by the fact he averaged around 2.3 dribbles per match in the Spanish top-flight during the season, according to WhoScored.

Aston Villa manager Emery will be keen to add some quality this window to take his side to the next level and Williams would be a statement addition at Villa Park who has bags of exciting potential.

However, whether he would be able to adapt quickly to the English game may be another question.

Pakistan crumble around Younis hundred

Australia made deep inroads into Pakistan’s batting line-up and ended a rain-hit day at the SCG ahead by 267 runs

The Report by Daniel Brettig05-Jan-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details3:45

Kimber: Younis a role model for young Pakistani batsmen

Good things come to those who wait. For the SCG crowd it was a couple of sessions of full-blooded play after waiting more than four hours in the rain. For Younis Khan it was a first century in Australia at the end of a barren tour. For Australia, it was a rush of wickets to give them a firm grip of the Pink Test with two days left. The wickets were as much due to Pakistan’s inattention as Australia’s excellence, with Azhar Ali and the captain Misbah-ul-Haq most due for introspection after falling prey to a run-out and a slog at Nathan Lyon, respectively. Asad Shafiq fell to a sublime catch by Steven Smith when he was already appealing for lbw, while Sarfraz Ahmed was accounted for by the extra bounce of the new ball in Mitchell Starc’s hands.Play was delayed until 2.45pm by light but persistent showers, reducing the minimum overs to be bowled to 54. Younis, though, was unperturbed by the break, continuing in a methodical manner on resumption and working his way towards a century. The milestone made him the only man to have a made a century in all 10 Test-playing nations plus Pakistan’s adopted home in the UAE.He was, however, complicit in the critical run-out of Azhar, who made it as far as 71 before he was undone by the combination of a ball driven fractionally out of the reach of mid-on – whom he had to wait for – and the strong left arm of Starc, who threw adroitly to the substitute gloveman Peter Handscomb; Matthew Wade being off the field and back at the team hotel with illness. There had been some reverse-swing for Starc and Josh Hazlewood when play began, the captain Smith preferring the pace pair to spin for the first 12 overs of the day. In that time Azhar evaded a close lbw shout from Hazlewood when on 59, the ball hitting leg stump but not enough to overrule the on-field call.Azhar Ali’s run-out ended a stubborn 146-run stand•Getty Images

A couple of other shots fell fractionally short of the fielders, and when Lyon was introduced he was able to gain some appreciable turn. However Azhar’s run-out was the only wicket, as Misbah hung on grimly in Younis’ more comfortable company until tea.One of the more intriguing duels in this series has been that between Misbah and Lyon; more or less the inverse of how things panned out in the UAE in 2014. While Misbah has tried to attack Lyon in the old familiar style, balls have been going to hand rather than over the boundary, and so it was again when he swung for the Bill O’Reilly Stand and could only find the substitute fielder Jackson Bird.At the other end Steve O’Keefe bowled neatly, challenging the stumps from wide of the crease, and was going up to appeal against Shafiq when a ball skidded on seemingly past the inside edge. Smith was up too, but somehow composed himself to claim a one-handed catch via Handscomb’s leg, which replays showed was the mode of dismissal due to the the thinnest of deflections from the bat.Sarfraz showed his familiar attacking intent but was unable to get over the new ball, offering another chance well held by Bird. Mohammad Amir showed rather less composure than he had done on previous visits to the middle, swishing Lyon heedlessly to mid-off. When Wahab Riaz was bowled by Lyon’s sharp offbreak in the penultimate over Australia were very much ascendant, in spite of Younis’ best efforts.

Everton: Reporter shocked at £25k-p/w ace’s big decision

Tom Davies' refusal to sign a new deal with Everton has come as a "surprise" to many, claims journalist Paul Brown.

Everton transfer news – What's the latest on Tom Davies?

Everton revealed last week that 24-year-old Tom Davies, who has been with the club since age 11, would be leaving the side when his current £25,000-a-week contract expires at the end of the month.

His departure comes despite the board's attempts to keep him at Goodison Park with the offer of a new contract, a development some sets of fans were "unhappy" with, per Brown.

In a statement to the fans, Everton Director of Football Kevin Thelwell said: "We offered Tom a new contract, but he feels he has reached the stage in his career where he needs regular first-team football and, as a result, he wants to look at alternative options away from Everton."

The 5 foot 11 dynamo made his Premier League debut for the club on April 16th 2016, and has since gone on to make 179 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven and assisting eight.

However, last season saw him start just 11% of the team's games and feature in just 15% of the available minutes, as per transfermarkt.

What did Journalist Paul Brown say about Tom Davies' situation at Everton?

Brown was clear that while Davies' refusal to sign the new deal surprised many onlookers, it was a decision that perhaps pleased some sets of the Everton faithful.

Speaking to Football FanCast, he said: "I think a lot of people were probably quite surprised that Davis turned down the contract that was offered to him, a lot of Everton fans were unhappy that he was offered it in the first place."

How did Tom Davies perform last season?

Like most of his teammates at Goodison, last season didn't see the 24-year-old's best performances on Merseyside.

According to WhoScored, he started just four games across the Premier League this season, coming off the bench a further 15 and averaging an undeniably poor match rating of just 6.12 during his time on the pitch.

However, the Liverpool-born midfielder's underlying numbers suggest that there is still a player somewhere in there and potentially, with a fresh start, he could rediscover some of his best form once again.

Tom Davies

According to FBref, who compare players in a similar position across Europe's top five leagues, Davies sits in the top 6% for non-penalty expected goals, the top 12% for blocks, the top 13% for touches in the opposition's penalty area and the top19% for total shots, all per 90.

It was only a couple of years ago that Toffees' legend Leon Osman was hailing the player for his performances in big games, telling the Athletic:

"He's learning to be himself and looks more comfortable in his own game. You're also seeing more maturity in his performances now.

"You can rely on him to give you a certain level of performance."

It is undeniable that Davies has had a poor year by his standards, but it still looks like there could be a good player in there, so maybe a move away from Everton would suit all parties involved.

Islamabad United batsmen Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif have been provisionally suspended under the PCB’s Anti-Corruption Code as part of an ongoing investigation into an organisation’s alleged attempts to corrupt the 2017 Pakistan Super League. Both batsmen have been sent home and no replacements have been named yet. The PCB’s investigation is being backed by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit.”It would not be appropriate to comment on the specifics of the case, however this investigation is a clear demonstration of our determination to drive corruption out of our sport,” Najam Sethi, chairman of the PSL, said in a statement. “We will not tolerate any form of corrupt activity and as this investigation proceeds we will not hesitate to take further decisive action as appropriate.”The investigation of the PCB Anti-Corruption Unit backed by the ICC ACU has been effective in dealing with this case to date and we will continue to work in the closest collaboration as the investigation proceeds. We are all absolutely committed to relentlessly pursuing anyone who would seek to damage the integrity of our sport.”Later, while speaking to reporters in Dubai on the second day of the league, Sethi added: “We were wary about anything like this and that’s why we were extra vigilant, and we had also beefed up our security and anti-corruption unit. We were using other resources to keep an eye on everything, and then we got evidence that some wrongdoing is underway and then we took action. We are guarding against corruption and we will be ready to take action any time, any day against anyone who is going to damage PSL.”PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan reminded players of their duties under the Anti-Corruption Code. “I must remind all players of their responsibilities in the fight against corruption,” Shaharyar said. “They must understand that if they even think they may have been the subject of a suspicious approach, it is their obligation under the PCB Anti-Corruption Code to report it to an appropriate anti-corruption official as a matter of urgency. Under no circumstances will the PCB condone actions of a few individuals to bring disrepute to the game of cricket or taint the image of Pakistan.”The Islamabad franchise also issued a statement saying they would begin looking for replacements. “We are understandably disappointed at this development but emphasise on our commitment to a zero-tolerance policy towards any violations of the rules or stated guidelines,” the franchise said. “We will be looking to find replacements for the squad as soon as possible.”Sharjeel played the opening match of the 2017 edition for the defending champions Islamabad on Thursday, scoring 1 against Peshawar Zalmi, while Latif was not part of the XI.Both batsmen did well for Islamabad in the 2016 PSL, scoring more than 200 runs. While Sharjeel finished as the third-highest run-scorer overall, with 299 runs in 11 matches, Latif struck 206 runs. The pair then made their returns to the Pakistan side during the 2016 Asia Cup and the World T20 respectively.Sharjeel has featured regularly in limited-overs matches since his comeback and recently made his Test debut against Australia in Sydney, where he scored 4 and 40. Overall, Sharjeel has played 25 ODIs and 15 T20Is since his international debut in December 2013.Latif made a comeback in the World T20 after four years out of the side. Since his debut in 2008, Latif has played five ODIs and 13 T20Is and his most recent appearance for Pakistan came in the T20 series against West Indies in September last year.

Chelsea: Pochettino could make unexpected decision

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino sees young centre-back Levi Colwill as a potential regular next season, according to an update from journalist Dean Jones.

Where does Levi Colwill's future lie?

The 20-year-old is arguably one of the most highly-rated young players in the country at the moment, being viewed as a future England regular by some.

Last season, Colwill was loaned out to Brighton for the entirety of the campaign, in order to get more minutes under his belt, and while he didn't always manage to oust Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster, he still started 13 times in the Premier League and looked the part.

Now back at Chelsea, there has been a huge amount of talking regarding the centre-back's future, with Liverpool seemingly interested in making a move for him this summer. The Reds see him as a special prospect who they are willing to break the bank for, but the Blues are understandably reluctant to let him leave.

Colwill's current Chelsea deal expires in the summer of 2025, and while that still gives the club some leeway over an extension, time is slowly running out and the player's head could be turned by a move to Anfield.

Levi Colwill Brighton

Will Levi Colwill be a regular at Chelsea?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones claimed that Pochettino could make Colwill a regular starter for Chelsea in 2023/24, potentially alleviating fears over his exit:

"I think that he's certainly a player that is expected to be embraced by Pochettino. The noises that I'm hearing from people that cover Chelsea closely are that Colwill could genuinely come into the thinking for a starting role."

This is hugely encouraging news from a Chelsea perspective, with Colwill someone they simply must keep hold of this summer, especially having already lost another homegrown player in Mason Mount, who has completed his move to Manchester United.

At 20, there is so much time for Colwill to mature into one of the best defenders in the Premier League, and given Pochettino's preference for blooding youth, it would be so refreshing to see him show trust in him from the off next season, starting him at home to Liverpool on the opening weekend.

The centre-back is in the final of the Under-21 European Championship on Saturday evening, as England take on Spain, and success in that competition would only further enhance his ever-growing legend.

Should Colwill become a key starter for Chelsea from this point on, he could even take Harry Maguire's place in England's team at Euro 2024 next summer, should his rise continue to be as meteoric as it currently is. He has all the tools to become a massive player for the Blues, enjoying an 88.6% pass completion rate for Brighton last season and also 2.2 clearances per game, showing he can be a class act in possession and also muck in defensively, when required.

The thought of losing him to a rival in Liverpool doesn't bear thinking about, and while Chelsea can't promise him European football next term, the hope is that he is made to feel wanted by Pochettino and plays a big part in the rebuild at Stamford Bridge.

Lahore prepares for PSL final amid high security

An estimated 18,000 tickets have already been sold for the PSL final in Lahore as the PCB attempts to bring high-profile cricket involving some overseas players back to Pakistan

Umar Farooq04-Mar-20172:09

Samiuddin: Risk of having final in Lahore outweighs potential reward

Over the last fortnight the security presence in Lahore has increased significantly, after a spate of bombings rocked Pakistan’s second largest city and other parts of the country too in February. The Gaddafi Stadium, situated in the Nishtar sports complex, has been off limits to the general public over the last three days. On March 5, however, it won’t be.An estimated 18,000 tickets have already been sold for the PSL final between Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators – a full house is expected on Sunday – as the PCB attempts to bring high-profile cricket involving some overseas players back to Pakistan.Though the PSL had maintained from the start that this year’s final would be held in Pakistan, the bombings over the last month had caused uncertainty. At least 13 people were killed and more than 80 injured in a blast near the Punjab assembly in Lahore on February 13, while more than 80 died after a bomb went off at a shrine in the Sindh province on February 16.To safeguard the PSL final, over 10,000 security personnel have been deployed, including Punjab police, and Pakistan’s paramilitary force – Rangers. The Nishtar Park compound has been protected by huge metal gates, and spectators will be able to enter the Gaddafi Stadium only after three layers of security checks, some of which take place at a two-kilometre protective perimeter around the venue. The first layer of checks – after the five areas marked for parking – can be passed only after verification of the person’s original national identity card. The entire complex has also been set up with a new range of scanners, high definition facial-recognition CCTV systems, and police control centres. No public vehicle is allowed within a kilometre of the sports complex, and entry will be on foot from Liberty roundabout and Ferozpur Road, through extensive security layers. Surrounding roads connected to the complex will be closed for traffic and alternative routes have been given by the Lahore traffic police.A makeshift hospital facility has also been built within the hockey stadium adjacent to the cricket stadium in case of emergency. The opening ceremony is scheduled for 6pm and the match for 8pm.”The entire city will function normally, and there will be less inconvenience, but for the sake of the people’s safety we have to have a tight security programme in place,” Rana Sana Ullah, the Punjab law minister, told reporters at Gaddafi Stadium.A rehearsal of the security drills was also carried out between the airport and the teams’ hotel on Mall Road, and from the hotel to the stadium, using the PCB’s bullet-proof buses. All these arrangements are being presented to foreign security advisors in a bid to inform other cricket-playing countries about the measures put in place by the PCB.The uncertainty over which foreign players will turn out for Peshawar and Quetta in the final is almost at an end, with the teams being asked to make up the numbers by choosing for a pool of foreign cricketers who are willing to play in Lahore. Quetta’s Kevin Pietersen, Luke Wright, Tymal Mills and Rilee Rossouw have already pulled out of the final, but Peshawar’s four overseas players are likely to travel to Lahore. It is believed that the foreign players will be offered separate payments – some as high as $50,000 – for playing in Pakistan. The origin of this present phase of security concerns over playing international cricket in Pakistan dates back to the attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore in March 2009. Pakistan have been forced to play their home matches at offshore venues – primarily in the UAE – ever since.Zimbabwe agreed to tour Pakistan for a limited-overs series in 2015, but even with extensive security measures in place for that visit there was a bomb attack during the second ODI. The blast occurred at the first checkpoint about 800 metres away from the stadium, killing two people, including a sub-inspector. Zimbabwe stayed on to finish the series, but the tour did not lead to a change in perception of the security conditions in Pakistan.
