£75m Underperformer Could "thrive" At Chelsea With Poch

Chelsea forward Kai Havertz could ‘definitely thrive’ at Stamford Bridge under new boss Mauricio Pochettino, transfer insider Dean Jones has told Football FanCast.

Chelsea news – What’s the latest on Kai Havertz?

Despite scoring ‘that’ famous goal in Portugal to help the Blues win the Champions League in May 2021, life in west London hasn’t gone entirely to plan for Havertz.

The former Bayer Leverkusen star made the £72m switch to England with a lofty reputation and price tag, but he has generally failed to live up to the expectations many had for him.

The last few weeks have seen several transfer rumours linking the German with a move away from the two-time European champions.

Just this week, it was reported in the German publication BILD that Spanish giants Real Madrid were considering the player, as he is a ‘dream player’ for coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has also reported that “Chelsea and Kai Havertz are on the same page”, and the Blues hierarchy is “prepared to let him leave.”

However, not everyone is on the same page, and some think that the 6 foot 4 forward can rediscover his form at Stamford Bridge.

What has Dean Jones said about Kai Havertz and Chelsea?

Jones thinks the coaching of Mauricio Pochettino might be just what the Aachen-born dynamo needs to fulfil his massive potential in England and stresses that despite the rumours, Chelsea aren’t exactly desperate to be rid of the player this summer.

Speaking to Football FanCast, the journalist said:

“Think of how Pochettino sides have played in the past, someone like Kai Havertz could definitely thrive, and Chelsea aren’t desperate to get rid of him. I think that’s important to point out.

“He was signed in line with being potentially one of the best forwards in the world over the next five, six years. They still believe he can become that in the right system.”

Kai Havertz Chelsea

Should Chelsea keep Kai Havertz at Stamford Bridge?

This depends on the figures involved in any potential deal to move the player on.

Should Real Madrid come in and pay the reported fee of £75m, per Evening Standard, the club should probably cut their losses and move on, especially after their increased spending over the last year.

However, if there are no buyers at that price point, it might be best to give Pochettino a chance to try and improve the player, especially since his underlying numbers aren’t that bad.

According to FBref, when compared to other attacking midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues, Havertz sits in the top 8% for non-penalty expected goals and the top 9% for touches in the opposition’s penalty area per 90.

Whilst not exceptional, there is clearly a foundation there for the former Tottenham Hotspur manager to work with.

Raj, Krishnamurthy steer India home after spinners strike

West Indies women will have to wait till the second ODI on Sunday to give themselves a shot at securing the one win they need to earn a direct entry to the 2017 Women’s World Cup, after a forgettable first outing against India in Vijayawada. They slumped to 131 all out before India’s captain Mithali Raj and middle-order batsman Veda Krishnamurthy steered the hosts to a six-wicket win.The pair put on an unbroken stand of 97 as India – who had slumped to 36 for 4 in the 17th over – chased down the target with 65 balls to spare. Raj faced 91 balls and hit six fours in her 46 not out, while Krishnamurthy brought up her fourth ODI fifty and was unbeaten on 52. The win was India’s seventh in 16 ICC Women’s World Championships matches and put them two points behind fifth-placed South Africa.Four of West Indies’ top seven, including Deandra Dottin – one of their most experienced batsmen – were out for single-digit scores after they had elected to bat. Hayley Matthews (24) and captain Stafanie Taylor (19) put on 37 for the second wicket – the highest partnership of the innings – before left-arm spinner Ekta Bisht removed both of them and Kycia Knight, to leave West Indies precariously placed at 63 for 4. Merissa Aguilleira, the wicketkeeper, top-scored with 42 not out as she carried the batting almost single-handedly, with no batsmen after her getting into double figures thanks to a four-wicket haul by Rajeshwari Gayakwad, India’s other left-arm spinner.West Indies lost their last four wickets for 16, three of those to Gayakwad, who finished with career-best figures of 4 for 21. Bisht, who bowled three maidens in her eight overs, finished with 3 for 14, while allrounder Shikha Pandey took the only other wicket that wasn’t a run-out, with her medium-pace.India, experimenting with the new opening combination of Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma, were rattled early. The opening pair put on 15, and No. 3 Mona Meshram – playing her first ODI in over three years – made 2 off 14, before falling to medium-pacer Shakera Selman (2-11). Harmanpreet Kaur’s dismissal for 1 shortly after reduced India to 36 for 4, giving West Indies a glimmer of hope. However the experience of Raj prevailed in the end as she saw the side home in Krishnamurthy’s company.

Liverpool Could Sign Robertson 2.0 In £40m Star

Liverpool are working on a midfield rebuild this summer with the signing of Alexis Mac Allister already confirmed, and now a new update has emerged on the club's next move.

What's the latest on Liverpool's interest in Tyler Adams?

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool are one of the clubs interested in signing Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams this summer.

As per the report, the player has told his recently relegated club that he wants to play in the Premier League next season and the Reds are one of the top-flight clubs who have checked on Adams' situation.

It is claimed that Manchester United and Newcastle United also have the midfielder on their radar and Leeds will command a £40m fee to part ways with one of their biggest assets.

Would Tyler Adams be a good fit for Liverpool?

It is no secret that Liverpool desperately need reinforcements after a difficult and disappointing season with the club failing to qualify for Champions League football for the first time since 2016.

Not only that, several mainstays will leave the club when their contracts expire next month as Naby Keita, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Roberto Firmino all move on, paving the way for Jurgen Klopp to build the next generation of success at Anfield.

As a result, the Liverpool boss could repeat the same transfer masterclass he performed with Andy Robertson by saving Adams from his relegated side and turning him into a player who can take his career to the next level by winning trophies.

Robertson's incredible journey from being relegated with Hull City in 2017 to becoming a Champions League and Premier League winner in just three years would surely inspire any player and if Adams could seal a move to Merseyside he could emulate the left-back's fairytale.

Despite Leeds' struggles, the American midfielder has been a standout performer at Elland Road this season and boasts a clear ability to play top-flight football.

Over 24 Premier League appearances, the 24-year-old ace – once hailed "top-class" by journalist Josh Bunting – tallied up an 82% pass completion rate and created one big chance, as well as averaging one key pass, 1.5 interceptions, 3.7 tackles, one clearance and six duels won per game, proving that he is a solid and reliable defensive presence in midfield.

tyler-adams-leeds-premier-league-chelsea-transfers

Not only that – to highlight just how impressive Adams has been for the West Yorkshire outfit – the prolific defensive midfielder matched Casemiro for tackles won in the top flight this season (89), which is made even more impressive when considering he played four fewer league games than the Manchester United superstar. Impressively, he also came second for tackles completed per minute in the entire league (22).

The opportunity to sign Adams could not come at a better time for the Reds with Thiago Alcantara in the last year of his contract next season and Brazilian midfielder Fabinho starting to show signs of a decline this season. That means the USMNT star could not only provide strong competition in the deeper midfield roles but could succeed either.

With that being said, if the club's hierarchy strikes up a cut-price deal for Adams it would be a no-brainer to snap up his services this summer, as the American could be a real asset in midfield for many years to come.

Newcastle Could Make Joelinton Better By Signing £80m ‘Monster’

Newcastle United have been strongly linked with Nicolo Barella this summer and now a new update has emerged on the club's pursuit of the player.

What's the latest on Newcastle's interest in Nicolo Barella?

The Independent's chief football writer Miguel Delaney reported that Newcastle have been in ongoing negotiations to sign the Inter Milan midfielder this summer.

As per an article written for the publication, Delaney revealed that the Magpies are currently £30m off the Italian club's valuation of £80m and will need to compete with Liverpool who are also keen to secure a deal for the talented Serie A star this summer.

That said, any deal could now be off the cards with the Toon turning their attention to Sandro Tonali, who they are believed to be close to signing.

Would Barella be a good fit for Newcastle?

There is no doubt that Eddie Howe will be thrilled with the rapid progress and development his team has made over the last 18 months, however, with Champions League football secured it will be important to bolster key positions and add quality depth in the squad.

As a result, the signing of not just Tonali, but also Barella would be an ambitious move for the club in their pursuit to compete at the highest level both domestically and in Europe next season and his presence in the team could have a positive impact on his fellow midfielders at St James' Park.

The 26-year-old would offer an incredible wealth of experience in European football to Howe next season, with 34 appearances, five goals and two assists in both the Europa League and Champions League over his career so far and most recently reached the final in Istanbul against Manchester City earlier this month.

Barella – hailed a "monster" by writer Carlo Garganese – ranks in the top 19% of his positional peers in the top five European leagues for progressive passes, progressive carries, shot-creating actions and non-penalty goals, making him the perfect profile of player to link up with Joelinton.

Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton.

The Brazilian ace was a revelation in both his midfield role and on the left-flank last term – scoring six goals, registering one assist and creating four big chances, so by combining his keen eye for attacking opportunities with Barella's ability to progress the ball into dangerous areas of the pitch, it could make Joelinton unplayable next season.

With that being said, it would be a no-brainer for the club's hierarchy to sanction the move for the Inter sensation this summer as his Champions League experience and clear talent in midfield could put Newcastle in a great position to compete more than comfortably throughout 2022/23.

Marsh doubts leave Australia unchanged

Australia’s revamped 12-man Test squad that won against South Africa in Adelaide has been retained for the first Test against Pakistan

Uncertainty over Shaun Marsh’s badly broken finger has ensured that Australia’s revamped Test squad was retained for the first Test against Pakistan at the Gabba. The selectors had made sweeping changes after Australia’s crushing defeat in Hobart, where South Africa secured the series, and only six of the XI from that Test retained their places for the day-night Test in Adelaide. Matt Renshaw, Peter Handscomb and Nic Maddinson all made their debuts in Adelaide, where Australia picked up a consolation victory.Maddinson, who made 80 in a Sheffield Shield match for New South Wales this week, was thought he man most likely to make way in the event of Marsh returning to fitness. However Marsh was not considered as he continues rehabilitation after a broken finger suffered against South Africa in Perth.”Shaun has yet to resume batting and will have a follow-up x-ray this week that will be reviewed by a specialist,” the CA head of sports science Alex Kountouris said. “This will determine when he can resume cricket training.”It is believed that Marsh’s finger injury, a re-break suffered during the first Test after he initially fractured it in Sri Lanka, is of a more serious nature than initially thought. Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann conceded that Marsh would now need to prove his fitness via the Big Bash League – either for the Pakistan series or the tour of India next year, for which he is considered a vital component given a sound batting method against spin.”Fingers crossed. Hopefully he’ll be batting soon, the specialist will be seeing him this week and hopefully that goes well and he starts batting again,” Lehmann said. “He’s only got BBL to play. If he plays that and gets through he’ll be available for selection.”Usman Khawaja did it last year, he had a BBL game from a hamstring and that’s all we had to go on. As long as they can get through then they’re available.”Lehmann also said Marsh would be able to slot into a middle order role when fit, despite most recently playing as an opener alongside David Warner. “He did really well in Perth in the Test match for us opening, he scored a hundred for us opening but he’s had success down the order as well,” Lehmann said. “He’s one of those guys who can fit in anywhere in the top six which is pleasing to have. It depends on what happens with other positions.”The Gabba Test is also a day-night affair, and given Australia’s success in Adelaide and the desire for stability, there is every chance they will take an unchanged XI into a Test for the first time in more than a year. The only possible alteration would be if Adelaide 12th man Chadd Sayers came into contention, and he did his chances no harm by taking eight wickets in the Sheffield Shield this week.”We were very pleased with how the team came together in Adelaide after some significant changes following the Tests in Perth and Hobart,” the interim selection chairman Trevor Hohns said. “This is a young group with a lot of promise and we believe all deserve their opportunity again in this upcoming Test.”Of Australia’s debutants from the previous match, Maddinson in particular will be keen to prove his Test worth at the Gabba, having fallen for a 12-ball duck in his only innings of the Adelaide Test. Maddinson bounced back from that disappointment with 80 in the first innings for New South Wales this week in their Shield game against South Australia. The other Adelaide debutants, Handscomb and Renshaw, both enjoyed longer stays at the crease in their first appearance for Australia. Handscomb scored a half-century in the first innings and then hit the winning runs in the second, while Renshaw occupied the crease for 137 balls in Australia’s chase to help them secure victory.Squad David Warner, Matt Renshaw, Usman Khawaja, Steven Smith (capt), Peter Handscomb, Nic Maddinson, Matthew Wade (wk), Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, Jackson Bird, Chadd Sayers.

Thakur faces contempt of court and perjury showcause notices

Anurag Thakur was not only removed as BCCI president by the Supreme Court on Monday, but he is also facing showcause notices relating to charges of contempt of court and perjury

Nagraj Gollapudi02-Jan-20172:46

‘No one is allowed to defy the Supreme Court’

Anurag Thakur was not only removed as BCCI president by a Supreme Court order on Monday, but he is also facing two showcause notices relating to charges of contempt of court and perjury. The court was severe on Thakur for having “obstructed and impeded” the implementation of the Lodha Committee recommendations approved by the court on July 18, 2016.From being one of the most powerful people in cricket as head of the BCCI, Thakur, 41, had his authority stripped off him, and his role with the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association, where he has been president since 2000-01, is also uncertain because of the limitations on tenure imposed by the Lodha Committee.”Mr Thakur has by his actions and conduct rendered himself unfit for continuance as President of BCCI, for the following reasons,” the Supreme Court observed in its order on January 2. “Firstly, he has obstructed and impeded the implementation of the directions contained in the judgment and order of this Court dated 18 July 2016.”His own version is that he has been ‘rendered totally incapable and without any authority’ to compel the members to comply with the orders of this Court. This is indicative of his having washed his hands off a duty and obligation to ensure compliance.”Despite reminders from the Lodha Committee and directives from the court that it was binding upon the BCCI and state associations to implement the recommendations unconditionally, the board resisted them. Thakur, in an affidavit filed on December 3, said he could not force the state associations to adopt the recommendations. The court did not buy that argument. “We are prima facie of the view that Mr Thakur is liable to be proceeded with for contempt of court for having obstructed and impeded the orders of this Court.”The court, however, reserved its harshest words for Thakur on the issue relating to his asking the ICC chairman Shashank Manohar for a letter stating whether the appointment of an official from the Comptroller and Auditor General’s office on the Apex Council would amount to governmental interference. The ICC does not permit government interference in the functioning of its member boards. The court took exception to the fact that Thakur had tried to scuttle one of the recommendations after it had been approved by the court. In a previous hearing on December 15, the court had said there was enough evidence to lay a charge of perjury against Thakur.According to the court, Thakur had tried to “solicit” such a letter from Manohar during the ICC Governance Review Committee meeting held in Dubai on August 6 and 7, 2016. Thakur, the court said, was attempting to “thwart” the implementation of the recommendations. “An attempt was made to build up a record to indicate that implementing the orders of the Supreme Court of India would run the risk of endangering the status of BCCI as a member of ICC.”In an affidavit last December, Thakur had told the court he had asked Manohar, who was BCCI president between October 2015 and May 2016, if he thought having a CAG official on the Apex Council could “invoke an action of suspension” from the ICC. Thakur said he asked Manohar during the Dubai meeting whether he could issue a letter of clarification. The court asked the Lodha Committee to seek clarification from Manohar too. The ICC chairman told the committee in an email on November 2 that he had declined to offer Thakur any letter.”The conduct of the President of BCCI in seeking a letter from the President of ICC in August 2016, after the final judgment and Order of this Court, is nothing but an attempt on the part of the head of BCCI to evade complying, with the Order of this Court,” the order read. “We are constrained to note that there was absolutely no occasion for the President of BCCI to solicit any such clarification from the Chairperson of ICC in the teeth of the judgment that was delivered by this Court.”According to the court, it had “adequate” reasons to doubt the veracity of the sequence of events narrated by Thakur. To emphasise its point, the court highlighted the affidavit signed by Ratnakar Shetty, BCCI’s administration and game development manager, and presented to the court on October 7, 2016, in response to a status report of the Lodha Committee.Shetty’s affidavit had stated that Thakur never sought a letter from the ICC. But during a subsequent hearing, the BCCI submitted in court minutes of a working committee meeting held on August 22, which noted that Manohar had been asked for a letter. The court took a serious view of this variance. “Prima facie it would appear that these minutes had not seen the light of the day when the response by Mr Shetty to the status report of the Committee was filed, and have been fabricated subsequently to lend credence to the version of Mr Thakur. The statement that Mr Manohar was requested to clarify the position which he had taken as BCCI President is falsified by Mr Manohar’s disclosure that he was asked to give a letter in his capacity as ICC Chairman.”
