'Not up to international standard' – Lehmann

“Not up to international standard” was the damning verdict of Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann after the tourists lost 11 for 77 on a frenetic day in Galle

Daniel Brettig in Galle05-Aug-2016″Not up to international standard” was the damning verdict of Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann after the tourists lost 11 for 77 on a hectic day in Galle to all but hand over the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy to Sri Lanka for the first time in its existence.Lehmann, who recently signed a contract extension to remain coach until October 2019, was frank in conceding that his side does not appear to have improved in playing spin bowling on Asian pitches since a 2-0 drubbing by Pakistan in the UAE in 2014. He also admitted that his players were being conclusively beaten between the ears as well as on the scoreboard by the hosts.”Disappointing full stop the way we played. Not up to international standard on that performance today,” Lehmann said. “Certainly haven’t played as we would like. Sri Lanka have played well and we haven’t. Can’t complain about the preparation from the lads and the work ethic, it gets down to the pressure in the middle of a Test match and being able to cope with it, and at the moment, we haven’t.”Certainly, some blokes have to look at themselves and how they want to go about it in these conditions and how to succeed. We’ve talked a good game in the media and the press, how we want to play, but we’re certainly not showing up at the moment.”I can’t put my finger on it really. It’s up to the players to get there and do that. We give them as much info as we possibly can, we’re pretty open in the way we want to play and the way we want to speak and all those sorts of things. It gets down to the players doing it on the ground, and at the moment, we’re letting ourselves down as a group. So they know what they want to do, it’s having the belief to do it and succeed. That’s the biggest thing with Test match cricket, especially here on the subcontinent.”Australia’s displays have been beset by similar problems to those witnessed in 2014, from batsmen failing to cover straight deliveries aimed at the stumps, to poor attacking shot selection and lapses in concentration that are seldom seen at home. This has been compounded by the fact that Sri Lanka are nowhere near as strong as Pakistan, or, for that matter, the Indian side that inflicted a similar hiding on the team coached by Mickey Arthur the year before.”Results will say we haven’t moved on, won’t they? It’s pretty simple,” Lehmann said. “So, from my point of view, and us as a group, we’ve got to get better, as simple as that. We’ve got to stop the rot. We’ve lost seven in a row, and tomorrow, we’ve got to play better to stop the rot. They know what they have to do, we’ve had lots of people who’ve played on the subcontinent help us out, so it’s not as though they haven’t got the knowledge or the knowhow to do it, it’s actually doing it out there on the ground under the pressure.”You get blame and that’s what happens when you’re a coach. If you play badly, you get blame, there’s nothing wrong with that, that’s part and parcel of professional sport. We’ve got to sit back and work out whether we’re doing the right thing. I believe we are, we’re just not implementing it on the ground. We’ve got to make sure we get the players doing what they’re supposed to be doing, and if they’re not, then we’ve got to find blokes that are going to.”The dire batting performances seen on this tour will add urgency to Cricket Australia’s search for a full-time batting assistant coach, following the departure of Michael Di Venuto earlier this year. While Lehmann’s former state and national teammate Greg Blewett had been appointed on an interim basis, and Stuart Law is in Sri Lanka while Blewett is on paternity leave, it appears a far greater level of Asian batting nous is required ahead of next year’s tour of India.”Still to be a full-time appointment there,” Lehmann said. “Diva’s left, Blewy’s there doing it at the moment and Greg had a baby, so that’s why he’s not on this tour, so Stuey’s come in to fit in there. That’s something we’ll have to look at after this series and all those things moving forward. No timeframe, but if we keep batting like this, it’ll be a bit quicker!”While acknowledging a superlative display from Mitchell Starc, who claimed 11 for 94 with minimal rest between innings, Lehmann said Australia’s spin bowlers, led by Nathan Lyon, also needed to improve. “Disappointing, same as the batters, no doubt about that,” he said.”Nathan Lyon’s experience has been very good for us over a period of time, but his record on the subcontinent’s not great. So he’s got to improve, there’s no doubt about that. Holland’s playing his first game and going to be a little bit nervous, so you give him a bit of leeway there, but, end of the day, their spinners have certainly out-bowled our spinners.”

Man Utd Must Ditch £350k-p/w "Weak Link" vs Chelsea

Manchester United head into tonight's Premier League encounter with rivals Chelsea knowing that just a point will secure their place in next season's Champions League, with the visit of the Blues also allowing Erik ten Hag's men the chance to move above Newcastle United into third place.

Having edged past AFC Bournemouth at the weekend, the Red Devils were handed a timely boost as top-four chasers, Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Aston Villa, ensuring that United are all but certain of at least sealing fourth spot.

While the Carabao Cup winners still have a meeting with Fulham to come at home on Sunday, Ten Hag will likely be keen to get the job done later today, providing the Dutchman with ample time to shift focus toward next week's FA Cup final showdown with Manchester City.

The Old Trafford outfit have received some welcome news ahead of this evening's meeting with Frank Lampard's men, with leading scorer Marcus Rashford – who has been absent with injury and illness of late – having been pictured in training in recent days.

The potential return of the Englishman – as well as the growing presence of Alejandro Garnacho – should well spell bad news for £73m man, Jadon Sancho, with the fleet-footed flop seemingly one player in line to be axed later today.

Will Sancho play against Chelsea?

The former Borussia Dortmund man has been unable to make the most of Rashford's absence in recent weeks, having failed to score or register an assist in each of his last five Premier League games.

After the wide man's sparkling previous form in Germany – where he racked up 114 goal involvements in 137 outings – the London-born enigma has looked a shadow of his former self throughout his time at the Theatre of Dreams, having scored just 11 goals and contributed only five assists in 76 games across all fronts.

Man United's Jadon Sancho

As United legend Dwight Yorke stated, it is something of a "mystery" as to why Sancho has been unable to replicate his Dortmund displays in the red jersey, with the treble winner subsequently stating that the 23-year-old is now on "borrowed time" at the club due to his blatant woes.

The £350k-per-week dud – who has been linked with an exit this summer – has proven himself to be something of a "weak link" at times this season, as per journalist Tom McDermott, having again underwhelmed at the Vitality Stadium at the weekend.

That trip to the south coast proved particularly disappointing for the Englishman as he 'underperformed again' – according to Manchester Evening News journalist, Samuel Luckhurst – having 'caused almost no danger' throughout his time on the pitch, in the words of GOAL's Richard Martin.

Equally, with regard to coming up against today's opponents, Sancho was also described by Luckhurst as the 'weakest link' when the two sides met in the reverse fixture, having been hooked early in the second half.

As such, on the evidence of the forward's extended woes, Ten Hag must ruthlessly replace his struggling asset this evening.

Man Utd May Try To Land £80k p/w Target On The Cheap

Manchester United will try and negotiate with Chelsea to land midfield target Mason Mount on a cheaper deal, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

What's the latest transfer news involving Mason Mount?

As per The Independent, Manchester United are the frontrunners to sign Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount this summer, though have yet to match the Blues' valuation of seeking at least £55 million to let the England international depart Stamford Bridge.

The Red Devils are in the process of being taken over and 'agreement on a price is now the only obstacle to his move to Old Trafford' amid rival interest from Arsenal and Liverpool, with Mount's preference said to be moving to Manchester United.

90min have revealed that Mount is said to be sitting down with his current employers next week for a meeting over his future in west London, as he is set to enter the final year of his £80k-a-week contract at Chelsea.

Mauricio Pochettino, who will manage Chelsea next term, is a big admirer of Mount and wants him to be a key part of his squad heading into 2023/24 if he can fend off admiration from Premier League clubs in his services.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jacobs thinks that Manchester United may try to land Mount for a cheaper price to reflect his contract situation at Chelsea.

Jacobs told FFC: "When I talked to the suitors, they believe that Mount should be worth, given the contract situation, £15-£20 million less than that, so there would be some negotiation to be done in order to broker a deal. All parties, regardless of what happens, whether Mount stays or goes, would like a speedy resolution. Mount wants to know his next club early in the window. Manchester United want to get business done early if they possibly can, despite the complications that I've outlined and Chelsea know that if Mount tells them he has no interest in staying and signing a new deal, that they will need the fee."

Would Mason Mount be a good signing for Manchester United?

Mount is a talented midfielder with plenty of Premier League experience and would fit nicely into Erik Ten Hag's project at Old Trafford as he looks to build on an impressive debut season in charge.

The 24-year-old did endure an inconsistent 2022/23 campaign with Chelsea, registering three goals and six assists in 35 appearances across all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

WhoScored also takes into account that Mount has been a creative force at the Blues in a campaign of disappointment, averaging around 1.3 key passes per match in the English top-flight.

Previously labelled as "unbelievable" by former Chelsea icon Joe Cole, it isn't hard to see why Chelsea are desperate to keep hold of Mount for next season, though Manchester United look to be in pole position to offer the Portsmouth-born ace a Stamford Bridge escape route, as things stand.

Strauss hopes for mass participation in Bangladesh tour

Andrew Strauss, the director of England cricket, hopes that there will be an en masse decision to undertake the tour of Bangladesh

Andrew McGlashan at Lord's26-Aug-2016England’s players will be given time to consider their personal position on touring Bangladesh but Andrew Strauss, the director of England cricket, hopes that there will be an decision to undertake the trip.Strauss had encouraged the players “not to leave anything unsaid” during the meeting in London on Thursday, where it was confirmed that the trip would take place as planned. He believes that it is “100% safe” to tour, following the advice of the ECB’s head of security Reg Dickason, and is eager for a collective spirit among the squad, even though he has opened his door for any player to have one-on-one meetings about any concerns. The ECB, who will continue to monitor the situation in Bangladesh ahead of their departure on September 30, were given detailed information on the levels of security that will be provided in Dhaka, Chittagong and Fatullah, while the successful hosting of the Under-19 World Cup – for which England sent a team – also had a significant bearing on the decision.”At no stage did we ask players whether they would make themselves available,” Strauss said. “We are not at that stage yet. I’m certainly hopeful that we can convince the players that it is safe to tour. I’m 100% convinced that is the case. I have the utmost confidence in Reg Dickason and his experience.”My view is that the job of the ECB and Reg is to assure the players it is safe to go and, once they have that, I’m very hopeful that we’ll have all the squad coming together and saying ‘let’s go’ as a group.”We can’t force anyone to go on any tour and nor would we want to. Our job is to assure them it is safe and if that’s the case there is no other reason to pull out of the tour. We will answer any questions they have and hopefully put any fears they have to bed.”Strauss, along with Test captain Alastair Cook who also attended the meeting, were part of the England squad that returned to India for two Tests under the captaincy of Kevin Pietersen after the Mumbai attacks in 2008. Of current first-choice Test players, Stuart Broad and James Anderson – the latter who joined the team meeting via conference call – were also on that trip.Although it may not be something on the minds of players as they try to decide whether to tour, England’s return to India generated a lot of goodwill and they will be warmly received in Bangladesh after the country feared they could see a widespread withdrawal of touring sides following Australia’s pull-out last year. Earlier this week, Bangladesh’s one-day captain Mashrafe Mortaza said: “Our friendship will get deeper if we play in this series. It is not just about the game.””I’ve been there before, I know this is an emotive topic, and for a lot of people they are going through it for the first time,” Strauss said. “It’s not easy and we appreciate what they are going through and that’s why it’s really important we give them the space and time to digest it all and ask any questions.”There were a number of references to 2008 and what we went through. I don’t think it’s particularly relevant to say it will happen the same way, but those players who went through it before have a pretty good idea of how things will work.”Using his experience of India, Strauss hoped that once the initial uncertainty had been overcome and the tour was underway that, even with the considerable security presence that will be around the team 24/7, from ground to hotel and back again, that the cricket will allow players to feel more at ease.”Clearly when we went back to India there was a huge security presence around us but after the first few days you get back into cricket mode and are thinking about winning games. I can’t say for sure that will be the case in Bangladesh, but my experience is that it will be.”Strauss also confirmed that himself, Tom Harrison, the ECB chief executive, and chairman Colin Graves will be going out to Bangladesh for various parts of the tour. The squads will be named shortly after the T20 against Pakistan next month.

Arsenal: Gunners Could Now Sell "Exceptional" Star

Arsenal “could be forced” to offload star defender William Saliba despite manager Mikel Arteta’s desire to keep him, according to recent reports.

Who could Arsenal sell this summer?

The Gunners, after falling short in their bid to win a first Premier League title in nearly 20 years, have returned to the drawing board as they prepare for what will be a very interesting 2023/2024 campaign.

Sporting director Edu has already confirmed that transfer planning has been done behind-the-scenes, with Arsenal now set to strengthen in the transfer market.

"Our planning has already been done,” said the Brazilian in May to ESPN (via 90min)

“It has already reached the owners. Now, we're taking things step by step. We're focused on how we will finish the season, but we've put in the planning and I'm very excited."

In terms of outgoings, certain players will need to be offloaded to balance Arteta’s squad, and there are a few who could depart.

Folarin Balogun, Emile Smith Rowe and Kieran Tierney have been heavily linked with departures – as well as young duo Zach Awe and Charlie Patino.

One player Arsenal will ideally not want to lose is Saliba, who played a key role in their title push last season before succumbing to injury late on.

declan-rice-william-saliba-arsenal

However, according to a report by The Sun, the north Londoners may actually “be forced to sell” Saliba this summer after being left surprised by his new contract demands.

Arsenal are extremely eager to tie the Frenchman down with a new deal as his current terms expire next year, but despite offering him a £120,000-per-week package, they’re struggling to reach an agreement.

Ligue 1 giants Paris-Saint Germain are said to be eyeing a move among all of this, and Arsenal are not prepared to let him run down his contract.

Arteta personally insists that Saliba is a crucial part of his plans and doesn’t want to sell this summer, with Arsenal potentially being forced to do so if they cannot reach an agreement on a new deal.

Arsenal are apparently working overtime to resolve this issue and recognise they may need to pull out all the stops.

Who is William Saliba?

The 22-year-old returned from a productive 21/22 loan spell from Marseille to great effect, standing out as a rock at the back for Arsenal over last campaign.

Saliba, called “exceptional” by Arteta for his contribution, was a mainstay for Arsenal – starting 27 top flight games of their title challenge before his injuries at the back end.

Losing him would be a significant blow to the Gunners as Saliba has formed a solid partnership with Gabriel Magalhaes in the heart of their defence.

Essex slump after Kent secure second

Essex will require three runs with only one wicket in hand to avoid the follow on after reaching stumps on day three in Canterbury on 289 for 9. Responding to Kent’s 441 all out, Essex lost wickets at regular intervals in this Specsavers Championship top-of-the-table clash, but a last-wicket stand worth 22 between David Masters and Matt Dixon has at least given the visitors a chance to avoid batting again on the final day of the campaign.Batting for the first time by 11.35am on day three, Essex lost two wickets in the short 15-over spell through to lunch as Kent maintained their grip on events despite a plucky knock from No. 4 Dan Lawrence, who rode his luck to score 88 having edged through the cordon when on 5 only to see Will Gidman down a chance at third slip on the same score. The visitors and second division champions elect, lost Varun Chopra, lbw for 25 to Kent’s man-of-the-moment, Darren Stevens, then Tom Westley, caught at square leg by Sean Dickson off the bowling of Mitch Claydon in the over before the interval.Kent maintained a check on the run rate in the afternoon session and also collected a further three wickets in the process as Nick Browne, Ravi Bopara and Adam Wheater all trooped back to the pavilion. Browne edged the 12th ball after the resumption to Sam Billings off Claydon then Bopara, digging down late on a full ball from Hardus Viljoen, also nicked through to the Kent keeper. Just before tea Wheater’s miscued pull against Matt Coles flew to deep square leg where Dickson took a comfortable catch.Viljoen continued to shine after tea by having Kishen Velani and Will Rhodes both caught at second slip by James Tredwell off successive overs. With 27 needed to avoid the follow-on and just 12 short of his fourth Championship hundred of the summer, Lawrence inexplicably holed out to long-on against the offspin of Tredwell. Masters, in his farewell appearance for Essex, was given a guard of honour by the Kent side as he walked to the middle, but Tredwell soon struck again by ripping an arm ball though Paul Walter’s defensive gate to peg back the left-hander’s off stump to leave Essex nine down.At the start of the day Kent had secured the second division runners-up spot upon reaching 400. Resuming on their overnight score of 387 for 7, the hosts motored past 400 with a fearsome back-foot cut by Coles that registered a fifth batting bonus point to clinch the ECB’s prize money cheque of almost £57,000 for finishing second behind Essex. In trying to repeat the stroke in the next over Coles nicked to Wheater to depart for 32 and give Masters, the former Kent seamer, his first wicket in the match. Masters struck again with a lifter that Viljoen could only glove to third slip then Stevens, on 136 and just four short of equalling his season’s best, clipped to deep backward square to give Dixon figures of 5 for 124.

Lauren Winfield top-scored with 79 and Nat Sciver made 58 as England’s women reclaimed the lead in their ODI series against West Indies in Jamaica with a crushing 112-run victory at Sabina Park.Despite a repetition of the batting frailties that cost England dearly in the second match of the series in Trelawny earlier in the week, Winfield and Sciver’s efforts proved more than enough as West Indies crumbled to 108 all out in reply to 220.Jenny Gunn, recalled to the side in place of Anya Shrubsole, who was ruled out of the remainder of the tour with a side strain, was the pick of England’s attack with 2 for 8 in five overs. After winning the toss and choosing to bat, England started badly with the loss of Tammy Beaumont and Georgia Elwiss inside the first eight overs. When Heather Knight fell for 22 to make it 74 for 3, Winfield and Sciver combined for a fourth-wicket stand of 95 to lay the foundations of victory. However, from the moment Winfield was bowled by Deandra Dottin, England lost their last seven wickets for 53, including five for 12 in 17 balls as Shaquana Quintyne finished with 3 for 36.England’s total, however, proved to be more than enough. Katherine Brunt trapped Hayley Matthews lbw for 5 before Gunn prised out Stafanie Taylor and Quintyne in quick succession, and when Merissa Aguilliera was run out for a duck, West Indies were 4 for 48 and sinking fast.
