Everton were rinsed by Cenk Tosun

Everton are renowned for enduring some transfer misadventures during the Farhad Moshiri era, with the club’s spending of more than £500m on signings amounting to nothing but financial trouble and relegation scraps.

Thankfully, it seems that, with the arrival of Frank Lampard and director of football Kevin Thelwell this year, recruitment strategies are changing and the recklessness over transfer spending could finally be a thing of the past.

However, it doesn’t eliminate the sting of financial draining that some players have committed during their time at Goodison Park, and one of the most notorious culprits for collecting a huge wage which seemed excessive given their contribution to the club is ex-Toffees centre-forward Cenk Tosun.

There is no doubt that the Everton hierarchy would have let out a sigh of relief when the 31-year-old finally parted with the club this summer following the expiry of his contract, making the move back to Turkey after failing to have a positive impact on Merseyside.

The Turkish striker joined Everton in 2018 for £27m whilst Sam Allardyce was manager, and it turned out to be one of the worst transfer decisions both financially and in terms of on-pitch contribution in recent years.

Tosun rapidly became an outcast in the team as his time at the club progressed, making just three appearances in all competitions for Everton last season even though both Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin suffered from multiple injury issues, illustrating that he was a player who Lampard could not wait to jettison.

The 31-year-old scored just 11 goals and delivered six assists over 61 appearances for the club, so when you combine his transfer fee and his salary of £69k-per-week, it makes for an eye-watering sum of £41.3m down the drain over his four-year stint with the Toffees.

This is equal to £3.7m per goal and £677k per appearance, which is an absolutely shocking return. Even worse, the Toffees couldn’t recover any of the money that Tosun cost the club, as he left on a free transfer at the end of his contract in June.

With those figures in mind, the Turkish flop is one of the finest examples to illustrate the transfer calamities that Moshiri has sanctioned over the last six years, and the Goodison Park faithful will be hoping that lessons have been learnt now that the striker has left the club for good.

Everton must unleash James Garner vs NUFC

Everton will make the trip to the North East in their Premier League clash with Newcastle United on Wednesday night, and Frank Lampard will be hoping his team can get back into form against Eddie Howe’s side.

The Toffees have lost their last two games after a six-game unbeaten run that saw the side comfortably climb the league table, but after losing to Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur they are now in no position to stagnate any longer as they are just two points clear of the relegation zone.

As a result, the Everton manager will be looking for ways to get his team back on track and freshening up the team could be the solution to reigniting their fighting form in the Premier League.

One player that Lampard should unleash is James Garner with the midfielder proving whilst on loan with Nottingham Forest that he offers not only a solid presence in the centre of the pitch but also creativity and goal contributions from his position.

Over 41 Championship appearances, Garner scored four goals, delivered eight assists and created seven big chances during an outstanding 2021/22 campaign. He also made two key passes, 1.4 interceptions and 1.8 tackles per game, as well as completing 54% of his dribble attempts too, proving that he could play a huge part in Everton’s much-needed improvements to the attacking threat

The former Manchester United rising star joined the squad at Goodison Park this summer for just £15m and Lampard has continuously sung the player’s praises despite not giving the midfielder the opportunity an appearance in the starting line-up yet.

Lampard told the media that the 21-year-old talent can give Everton something “different” after making his club debut:

“He looks a bit different to our other midfield players in his attributes; his passing, his delivery of set-pieces and shots he can get away. He is a really clean striker of the ball in a sense of his passing.

“I’m pleased to get him on the pitch. He deserved it in his training and he’s going to be a big player for us.”

That difference in attributes to the other midfielders the manager has at his disposal could ultimately become Everton’s unpredictable secret weapon against Newcastle tomorrow night, and in turn, earn the side the three points they need to climb out of danger.

With that being said, Lampard must unleash Garner in the starting line-up at St James’ Park as there is clearly an opportunity to try something new after two consecutive defeats, and the manager may find that the decision to start the young midfielder massively pays off for the Toffees.

Hope drops Newcastle injury news on Isak

The Daily Mail’s northeast football correspondent Craig Hope has revealed that Alexander Isak has suffered an injury ‘setback’ for Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Isak ruled out

The 23-year-old was ruled out of this afternoon’s game at Manchester United in the Premier League, despite Eddie Howe claiming that the striker was making ‘progress’ in his recovery from injury.

However, it now looks as if he is going to be sidelined for longer than first feared, having been hit by a fresh setback.

The Latest: Isak injury ‘setback’

Taking to Twitter in sharing a corresponding article for The Daily Mail on Sunday morning, Hope has revealed that Isak has suffered a ‘setback’ in his recovery from a thigh injury after pulling up with the same issue.

The Sweden international was ‘nearing’ a return to action, but he is now set to miss at least the next three matches for Newcastle in what Hope describes as a ‘fresh blow’.

The journalist stated: “Newcastle’s Alexander Isak suffers setback in recovery from thigh injury after pulling up with same problem. £60m striker was nearing return but now set to miss at least next 3 games after fresh blow. More news awaited on full timescale.”

A subsequent report from The Athletic delivered even worse news for the Magpies, claiming that the 23-year-old will ‘probably’ be sidelined until after the World Cup.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-7/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Big blow

After the hope that Isak could feature in the next few games after making progress in his recovery, it is certainly a big blow for Howe and Newcastle to now lose him for what looks like until Boxing Day at the earliest.

With two goals in his first three appearances in the league, the club-record signing from Real Sociedad had adapted to English football quickly, and his manager will have wanted to ease him into the team further with more opportunities.

However, with Allan Saint-Maximin also suffering a setback in his recovery from an injury, the Magpies will need to find a way to make their attack click over their forthcoming matches without two of their key players.

Aston Villa must appoint Unai Emery

Aston Villa have been linked with some prestigious managers since sacking Steven Gerrard just three days ago.

Whilst Mauricio Pochettino was the most renowned name touted, it swiftly was made clear that this would be a step too low for the Argentine who was most recently the boss of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar at Paris Saint-Germain.

There was, however, another name of similar stature that persists, despite he too being a world-class manager, and that is Unai Emery.

The Spaniard already has experience in England, as well as across Europe at every level. He most recently led his Villarreal side to the Champions League semi-finals but has also won the Europa League four times.

If Johan Lange was to tempt him to make the move to Villa Park, it could be the catalyst to getting the supporters back onside after the tumultuous and often polarising nature of the previous regime.

Although Emery’s football is not the most enthralling, if it were to secure results, it would not take long for him to be revered across the Midlands.

He boasts tactical flexibility that would make him a fine addition to the Villans and following their comprehensive win over Brentford yesterday it is pleasing to know that he favours a 4-2-3-1 formation – the set-up which worked so well against the Bees.

It is no surprise that journalist Ben Figo labelled him a “master tactician” and “one of the best coaches in the world”.

The 50-year-old likes to enforce a defence rigidity, bolstered by a free-flowing counterattack that could benefit the tricky forwards they possess.

Leon Bailey, Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Buendia and many more would thrive under these conditions.

The fact that it is a possibility, despite his pedigree, can be traced back to Newcastle United’s manager search back in November 2021, where the Villarreal boss was reportedly keen on a return to England but had a Champions League run to contend with.

Now that his side is only in the Europa Conference League, perhaps it could mark a chance for Lange to tempt him to return to the place where he impressed with Arsenal despite being ridiculed out of the country.

He has proved just how good he can be at almost every club he has overseen, but Villa could be his biggest challenge yet. His mere presence alone would almost certainly get the supporters rocking though.

West Brom: Corberan must unleash Rogic

West Bromwich Albion’s first match under the new leadership of Carlos Corberan is fast approaching, and with the Baggies’ current run of miserable form, there are a few decisions the Spaniard has to make to give himself the best possible chance of a winning start.

Appointed just two days ago, Corberan signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the hopes that he can stabilise a club currently in freefall and eventually mastermind their return to the Premier League.

The management of both Steve Bruce and Richard Beale sees Albion currently occupying the second-tier relegation zone, where they sit three points adrift from safety. The Baggies have won just once in 11 Championship matches.

One of these decisions that he must make is to give Tom Rogic a solid run of games in the starting line-up, as he boasts qualities far beyond most players in the squad.

Having earned unbridled success at Celtic following his £400k move to Glasgow in 2013, he went on to have eight hugely successful years with the Scottish heavyweights.

The Australian won seven Scottish titles, five Scottish Cups and five more League Cups, featuring 272 times across this period.

He would score 46 and assist 49 – a fine return for a midfielder.

This contribution led Ange Postecoglou to laud the “tremendous contribution” to the club he and Nir Bitton had made, whilst also dubbing them “very talented players” as they departed.

This kind of pedigree and experience makes him a more impressive option than Jake Livermore, as well as a more experienced and talented addition to help improve the Baggies’ young midfielder Taylor Gardner-Hickman.

Although he has suffered a patchy start to life at the Hawthorns, with an average SofaScore match rating of just 6.47 whilst playing 34 minutes per game – under the management of Corberan, he could well thrive.

Both he and Postecoglou prefer a highly structured pressing style, so Rogic should take like a duck to water with the Spaniard’s methods.

Bruce vastly underused the 29-year-old before being sacked, and now we could see the very best of the Socceroos star.

With quality and experience in spades, plus the tactical nouse to instantly identify with the new system, Corberan will be thanking his lucky stars that he has a player like Rogic to instantly rely upon in his midfield.

Spurs: Conte now targeting Victor Osimhen

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte is now personally keeping tabs on Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Paratici planning…

The Lilywhites oversaw significant investment in Conte’s first-team squad over the summer after he guided them to a top-four finish in the Premier League last season.

Subsequent deals were struck for a plethora of major signings in one of Tottenham’s busiest-ever transfer windows, with club owners ENIC even granting a £150m equity increase.

Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Clement Lenglet, Djed Spence and Destiny Udogie (on loan at Udinese) all joined the club, with Spurs also making Cristian Romero’s loan move permanent.

Tottenham currently sit in the top four, winning eight of their opening 14 league matches, but the demands of English top-flight football ensure that squads remain ever-changing.

The Latest: Conte eyeing Osimhen move…

According to reports out of Italy, Conte is now thought to be an admirer of Osimhen, who has already netted a very impressive eight goals and two assists in nine Serie A starts this term.

This comes amid exit links surrounding star striker Harry Kane as the player’s contract is due to expire in 2024, not to mention that the Englishman is apparently attracting interest from Bayern Munich.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-3/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Italian journalist Rudy Galetti has now claimed that Conte ‘sees’ Osimhen as the ‘ideal replacement’ for Kane.

It’s added that a ‘deal’ for the Nigeria international could ‘go through next summer’, with a 2023 agreement possible.

The Verdict: Ambitious…

We believe that Osimhen may be too far out of chairman Daniel Levy’s desired price range.

Reports suggest that the 23-year-old could cost around £100m to prise away from Napoli, even if his form indicates that he is certainly capable of performing in England.

Heralded as a ‘beast’ by members of the media, Osimhen could soon be one of the transfer talking points of next year if he continues to dazzle in Serie A.

West Ham could land Isaiah Jones transfer

West Ham United seemingly already have their plans in place for the upcoming January transfer window…

What’s the latest?

According to transfer insider Pete O’Rourke, Middlesborough winger Isaiah Jones is poised to make the well-tread path from the Championship to the London Stadium.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he claimed: “He is another player who has really impressed in the Championship and West Ham have had a lot of success signing players from the Championship and making the step up to the Premier League.

“Isaiah Jones is still a very raw player, but he has real exciting potential and is lightning-quick. He has shown in the Championship that he can score goals and provide goals.

The journalist made those comments in light of reported interest from the Hammers who could be set to battle Crystal Palace of his signature.

He’s an exciting Benrahma partner

With his scorcher in their recent loss to the aforementioned Eagles, it marked Said Benrahma’s fourth goal of the season and his sixth goal contribution overall. It could finally be the campaign that sees the Algerian pay back his £25m fee.

What would certainly aid his development is to pair him with an equally attacking full-back, who could interchange and overlap to provide another man over but extra space, where the 27-year-old can be so deadly.

Now, in Jones, they could have found the perfect player for their long-term future; especially given the age of both Vladamir Coufal and Aaron Cresswell.

The 23-year-old already has four goals and three assists in the Championship for Boro, with his blistering speed and quick feet making him more akin to a traditional winger than a full-back.

It marks a second successive season where he seems set to be a standout creative outlet for an often uninspired team, as last campaign saw him register nine assists in numerous positions.

Largely a right-sided player, he also has the ability to play from the left-hand side, and with 1.9 tackles and 5.9 ground duels won per game, he is evidently a versatile asset who isn’t afraid of getting stuck in.

With the speed to help him offer at both ends of the pitch, and a wicked delivery that earns him his assists, all it would take is a year or two to adjust to the physicality of the Premier League.

By that point, Benrahma would be hitting his prime years, and his tricky and technically-proficient play style would likely thrive alongside the physical marvel of the exciting Jones.

Leeds: Championship sides race to sign Adam Forshaw

Leeds United midfielder Adam Forshaw is attracting plenty of interest from several Championship clubs, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Drameh attracting interest

The Whites could be set for a busy January transfer window, with Forshaw not the only potential departure. According to Fabrizio Romano, young right-back Cody Drameh is of interest to Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund, Lille and Newcastle, who are all keen on securing his services in 2023.

Drameh has made just one appearance in the Premier League this season and hasn’t been in a top-flight matchday squad since September, so it’s perhaps no surprise that he may be allowed to leave Elland Road.

The Latest: Forshaw also in demand

Football Insider shared a story regarding Forshaw shortly after Romano’s update on Drameh. They revealed that ‘multiple Championship clubs are interested’ in the 31-year-old, with one of the interested suitors pushing for promotion. No club is mentioned explicitly in the report.

Leeds are set to entertain offers for the midfielder in January, with his contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates-copy/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Exit inevitable?

Forshaw has struggled to remain fully fit over the last four years and, like Drameh, hasn’t featured in a matchday squad since September.

Therefore, the 31-year-old leaving in January could make sense for all involved, and a drop back down to the Championship could be just what he needs.

You’d expect that Forshaw will want to play regular first-team football next year, something which looks unlikely at Elland Road, so his situation will be one to watch over the coming months as Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta potentially weigh up a farewell to a loyal servant of nearly five years.
