"We’ll see what happens" – £35m Man Utd man could leave Old Trafford

Manchester United haven't had the greatest recent history when it comes to transfers, with Antony's stats representing a player who is yet to get going at Old Trafford, whilst Andre Onana's mistakes have stolen the headlines at times this season. It is a recruitment issue that the Red Devils must solve if they are to take their place among the Premier League's best sides every season.

When the January transfer window swings open, Erik ten Hag could once again welcome changes when it comes to both departures and incomings. And that could see one particular player depart after his most recent admission regarding game time at Old Trafford.

Man Utd transfer news

Lying outside of the Premier League's top four and on the brink of a Champions League group stage exit, United haven't had the greatest start to the season, with off-field issues such as Jadon Sancho's falling-out with Ten Hag playing a part. Heading into the festive period, the Manchester club will be well aware of the need to pick up some consistency before the January transfer window arrives to potentially deal them a frustrating blow.

Man Utd could ease Eriksen blow by unleashing their "new Van de Beek"

This £250k-p/w midfielder has already been called the “new Donny van de Beek”.

ByAdam Scully Nov 12, 2023

Speaking to De Telegraaf recently, Donny van de Beek admitted his need for minutes on the pitch and hinted at a potential winter exit, saying: "I have to start playing matches very soon, if not at Manchester United, then at another club. I think this is a healthy ambition.

“Look, I’ve always been an enthusiast. I’m absolutely crazy about football. I earn a good living at Manchester United, but money has never been my motivation. I want to enjoy my work every day. Last season, I was sidelined for months due to my knee injury. You miss it terribly and appreciate even more that you have a wonderful profession. I am at a legendary club and I am still proud every day to wear the Manchester United shirt. But I’m bursting with energy now that I’m in great shape again and I’m training like crazy. Then the moment comes when you have to make a choice.

“I’m excited to play matches again. The manager now makes different choices. We have a great selection and I’m not the only one knocking on the door. We’ll see what happens in January.”

"Fantastic" Van de Beek needs move

It just hasn't happened for the Dutchman at Manchester United, as Van de Beek's stats at the club show. The former Ajax man has made just 62 appearances since joining the club in 2020, scoring and assisting just twice each. Van de Beek's price tag of £35m put instant pressure on his shoulders, but whether it's been through not receiving the opportunities or failing to perform, he has not reached the standards that Ten Hag demands.

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek.

A move away could revive the midfielder, who earned praise from Frank Lampard while on loan at Everton. Speaking after a clash against Leeds United in 2022, the former manager said (via Manchester Evening News): Him [Van de Beek] and Allan were fantastic, also Donny on the ball giving us a sense of calm and intelligence, and a nice rhythm in the team, and he’s going to get better and better."

Casemiro 'look like he's playing in Soccer Aid' as Man Utd midfielder sees attitude questioned following underwhelming display in Premier League draw with Bournemouth

Jamie Redknapp claims Casemiro is looking like he's in "Soccer Aid" after his lacklustre display for Manchester United in the 2-2 draw at Bournemouth.

Man Utd draw 2-2 at BournemouthMidfielder Casemiro's display criticised'Looks like he's playing in Soccer Aid'WHAT HAPPENED?

Two goals from United captain Bruno Fernandes helped Erik ten Hag's men twice come from behind to claim a point after strikes from Dominic Solanke and Justin Kluivert. After the match, former Tottenham and Liverpool man Redknapp tore into the Brazilian international and demanded he worked harder for his team.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT JAMIE REDKNAPP SAID

"I’ve watched him [Casemiro] for many years and he is one of my favourite midfielders in world football," he said on Sky Sports. "I love watching him play. But right now he looks like he’s in Soccer Aid. He looks like he’s playing at such a pace where the game is a bit of fun and there’s celebrities coming on the pitch. No. This is the Premier League… you’ve got so much experience. That isn’t the case of anything else apart from running."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Casemiro looked like a worthwhile £70 million ($87.2m) purchase from Real Madrid in the summer 2022 after an impressive 2022/23 campaign but the 32-year-old's performances have been found wanting this season. The midfielder said he was having sleepless nights over the Red Devils' league position, now seventh, but clearly Redknapp feels Casemiro is not showing enough urgency and desire right now.

Saurashtra captain Jaydev Shah to retire from all cricket

Saurashtra came within touching distance of clinching the Ranji Trophy under Jaydev’s captaincy on two occasions

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Dec-2018Jaydev Shah, the Saurashtra captain, will retire from all cricket after the upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka in Rajkot. The son of former BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah, Jaydev has already captained his team to a record 111 matches, the highest for anyone in the Ranji Trophy. The match against Karnataka on December 6 will be his 120th first-class appearance.Jaydev, who made his first-class debut in 2002-03 averages over 29 with the bat, aggregating 5253 runs with ten hundreds and 19 fifties. This season, he has shown good form with a 165 in the previous encounter against Baroda and an unbeaten 81 against Gujarat. His List-A and T20 numbers are paler in comparison, with averages of 20.26 and 16.20 in 65 and 36 matches respectively.Jaydev famously led Saurashtra to the Vijay Hazare Trophy title in 2007-08, which to date remains Saurahstra’s only title across formats in domestic cricket. His appointment as India A captain for a short tour of Israel in 2008 was a corollary of that one-day title win. Saurashtra also came within touching distance of clinching the Ranji Trophy under Jaydev’s captaincy on two occasions – in 2012-13 and 2015-16 – but were thwarted at the final hurdle by Mumbai, losing by an innings on both occasions.Jaydev was contracted by Rajasthan Royals, Deccan Chargers, Mumbai Indians and finally Gujarat Lions, who had bought him for INR 20 lakh in the 2016 edition of the IPL. However, he did not play a single match for any of the franchises.

After he completes the marathon, he will be hoping he can witness Erik ten Hag's side secure a spot in the FA Cup final. The winner of the tie between United and Championship side Coventry will face Manchester City in the final. Pep Guardiola's side secured a 1-0 win against Chelsea in the other semi-final, which took place on Saturday evening.

Klopp eyeing Liverpool move for £17m-rated Van Dijk heir who’s a "Rolls-Royce"

After Liverpool's 4-3 victory over Fulham on Sunday, Jurgen Klopp will have berated his triumphant squad and bemoaned the defensive problems that threaten to derail the side's campaign.

It's probably not fair to say that the Reds throw Hail Mary at the opponent's goal, but there's an undeniable flimsiness in protecting Alisson – or Caoimhin Keller – between the sticks after being caught in transition that speaks of residual issues from last term.

However, Klopp's side have been sensational in implementing a never-say-die attitude and have reaped the rewards of such daring endeavours, with the late turnaround against the Cottagers underpinning such a mindset.

But daring would turn to foolhardy were the Reds to neglect the strengthening of the backline this January. Second in the Premier League, Liverpool are just two points behind Arsenal but will need to be perfect if they are to leapfrog Mikel Arteta's men and chase down the trophy.

Of course, the small task of swatting away Manchester City also falls onto Klopp's lap; the Treble-winning side have been uncharacteristically leaky at the back this season and have drawn three league games in succession, but Kevin De Bruyne will return from a long-term injury soon and City so often raise the standard after the new year.

Reinforcements would be embraced on Merseyside, with Liverpool reportedly earmarking a prodigious defensive talent…

Liverpool transfer news – Leny Yoro

According to a recent report from TEAMtalk, Liverpool are joined by Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in pursuing a move for LOSC Lille centre-back Leny Yoro, with the £17m-rated teenager impressing in France and said to be driving scouts wild with his showings.

Aged just 18, Yoro has been a mainstay in Paulo Fonseca's fourth-placed Ligue 1 side and could be the long-term solution to Liverpool's backline that Klopp so dearly craves.

Lille defender Leny Yoro.

Out of contract in 2025, Lille are in a vulnerable position and might find a tough task in convincing the player to stay on the books, meaning a transfer in 2024 is more than feasible.

Leny Yoro's style of play

Yoro has chalked up 34 senior appearances for Lille already, and that's despite only turning 18 last month; last season, he enjoyed an impressive breakthrough and earned eight starts in Ligue 1.

But since the summer the £4k-per-week titan has come into his own and established himself as one of Lille's most integral parts of the starting team, forging 18 displays across all competitions and scoring three goals – starting the past 12 Ligue 1 fixtures in a row.

Despite his youthful years, he is already nurturing an innate sense of security in the rearguard and has been imperious in the French top-flight, with respected talent scout Jacek Kulig recently remarking that he is "world-class material."

Seemingly holding the blueprint to success as a modern central defender seeking a place in a European-challenging team, Yoro ranks among the top 7% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion and the top 8% for goals scored per 90, as per FBref.

Such qualities have seen him likened to his compatriot William Saliba, with the Arsenal defender the venerable centrepiece of Mikel Arteta's pursuit of glory over recent times, belying his 22 years of age with brilliant and unwavering performances.

Arsenal currently perch atop the Premier League table and boast the division's best defensive record after 14 matches, conceding 11 times.

Having yet to miss a minute of league action, Saliba has been crucial, completing 93% of his passes, making 5.4 ball recoveries per game and winning 60% of his ground duels, as per Sofascore.

With Saliba signing for the Gunners for £27m in 2019, Yoro could emulate his peer by crossing the channel and joining Liverpool in the Premier League, though whether the Reds would wish for him to depart on loan – as Saliba did for several years – remains to be seen.

But there is ample quality to be found in Les Dogues' exciting talent, who is doing the basics with pinpoint accuracy, marrying this with ball-playing ease to glide into the conversation for Europe's most precocious youngsters.

How Yoro compares to Virgil van Dijk

While Virgil van Dijk is ostensibly the best defender in the Premier League – perhaps even the best in Europe based on his level this term – Liverpool will need to draw up plans for an heir, with the bolstering of the backline of great importance for Klopp.

Yoro could assume that role, having been hailed as a "Rolls-Royce" by journalist and scout Antonio Mango, but moves would have to be made swiftly to ward off attention from Premier League rivals.

The France U21 international has truly been magnificent in 2023/24, with Sofascore recording his exemplary performance and highlighting his 91% passing accuracy, 1.5 tackles, 3.9 ball recoveries and 3.5 clearances per game and his success in 67% of his contested duels – eclipsing Saliba in that regard.

Such composure and imperiousness could be the perfect skill and style for Yoro to serve as Van Dijk's heir, with the Liverpool captain at the heart of his side's efforts but, aged 32, in need of a long-term successor.

Van Dijk fell by the wayside last year and was said to have been "nonchalant" by reporter DaveOCKOP for his languid displays, very much at the centre of his outfit's struggles.

The £220k-per-week machine ranks among the top 6% of centre-backs for passes attempted, the top 4% for assists, the top 16% for shot-creating actions and the top 3% for aerial duels won per 90, highlighting the myriad of abilities that have facilitated such staggering success.

Joining Liverpool from Southampton for £75m in December 2017, the Dutchman has now completed 235 appearances and has been integral in the sweep of silverware won under Klopp's wing.

This term, his metrics have frankly been astounding; across 12 Premier League appearances, he has completed 91% of his passes, averaged 0.5 key passes, 4.9 ball recoveries and 4.8 clearances per game and won a staggering 76% of his total duels.

Yoro has already demonstrated his sharpness in his defensive duties and could absorb the Liverpool colossus' best attributes with a move to Merseyside, and Klopp must make sure that it happens.

13 iconic football shirt sponsors – ranked

Football shirts are big business, and fashion has become as big a part of football as having a pie and a pint with your mates. In this modern age, football clubs have to walk the tightrope of making money through sponsorships, but also having a kit that looks good.

In this exploration of iconic football pairings, Football FanCast journeys through time and leagues to uncover the stories behind some of the most memorable alliances.

From Barcelona's historic collaboration with UNICEF during their golden era to PSV Eindhoven's record-breaking bond with Philips, each pairing tells a unique story and has helped to create some of the most memorable shirts in history.

In this list, shirts are ranked by the look on the shirt itself as well as its standing in football culture.

13 Dr Martens West Ham United 1998-2003

Talk about knowing your audience. Dr Martens' sponsorship of West Ham is an almost perfect match; the only way it could have been made any better is if Stone Island made the kits instead of FILA. Paolo Di Canio was stomping about the old Boleyn Ground wearing this, which is very fitting.

The partnership came to an end in 2003, lasting just five years. In that short period of time, the boot company helped make some of the best claret and blue shirts in history, not just for West Ham. Seeing them dotted around the new Olympic Stadium is a throwback to where West Ham came from.

12 Unicef Barcelona 2006-2012

Having previously gone sponsor-less entirely, Barcelona's commitment to the charity UNICEF came at arguably the most successful period of their history. Between the years of 2006-2011, players like Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi, and Andres Iniesta were sporting the logo while banging in goals and winning trophies.

"FC Barcelona is highly committed to work with UNICEF to advance the global message of the importance of children's issues and to promote education and sport," said ex-Barcelona director Ramon Pont. The partnership yielded around €19m for the charity, but in the end, money won out, and the Catalan club ditched Unicef for the Qatar Foundation in 2011.

11 Parmalat Parma 1987-2004

From the late 90s to the early 2000s, Parma were a major force in Italian football. Gianluigi Buffon, Hernan Crespo and Fabio Cannavaro were all ripping it up in the picturesque Italian city before the club went bankrupt in 2004. Parmalat, a food and dairy corporation, were with them all the way.

Parma aren't the only football club Paramalat have sponsored, Benfica, Boca Juniors, Palmeiras, and even Real Madrid have had the brand strewn across the front of their shirts. The company sponsored their hometown club as they got promoted to Serie A in 1990.

Interestingly, the period of time Parmalat sponsored Parma also turned out to be when the fraud began. The company is still operating, but it's a shell of its former self, much like Parma Calcio.

10 Philips PSV 1979-2016

PSV and Philips is the only duo on this list to be in the Guinness Book of World Records – it's the longest sponsorship of a sports team in history. The technology company founded the club in 1913 as a pastime for its employees.

The history of both club and sponsor are so deeply interlinked, it would be impossible to imagine one without the other. PSV's ground is called Philips Stadion, which is just a few minutes from the company's headquarters in central Eindhoven. They ended their shirt sponsorship deal in 2016, but Philips still works with the club in other ways.

9 Quilmes Boca Juniors 1994-2002

For good and bad, beer goes hand in hand with football. This won't be the only brewery sponsorship on this list, but it is arguably the coolest. Football hipsters across the globe weep tears of joy when they spot a Quilmes-sponsored Boca shirt out in the wild.

It's Juan Roman Riquelme, it's late-career Diego Maradona, it's La Bombanera going nuts. If you close your eyes and think of a Boca shirt, it probably has Quilmes on the front. The beer is pretty good, too.

8 T-Mobile Bayern Munich 2002-present

Bayern Munich being sponsored by T-Mobile just feels right. Their minimalist, no-nonsense logo suits a club with the ruthless efficiency of Bayern. The partnership started in 2002 and has coincided with a period of unprecedented dominance for the Bavarians.

Bayern have now won 11 Bundesliga titles in a row, and could yet win another without breaking much of a sweat this season (unless Bayer Leverkusen are able to maintain their superb start). T-Mobile are the biggest telecommunication company in Germany, and Bayern are the biggest club. It was meant to be.

7 Carlsberg Liverpool 1992-2010

Fernando Torres' beautiful, long blonde hair blowing in the wind as he runs off to celebrate yet another goal is exactly what comes to mind when we think of Liverpool and Carlsberg. There isn't a better advert than that; in the end, that's what sponsorship is all about.

Although not technically against the rules, alcohol shirt sponsors have dwindled in the UK. There hasn't been a Premier League club sponsored by an alcohol company since 2017/18, they're all betting companies instead now.

6 Opel AC Milan 1994-2006

It's no coincidence that a lot of these sponsors coincide with a very successful time in the club's history. Who remembers the sponsor AC Milan had on their shirt when they were relegated in 1979/80? (They didn't have one, but the point still stands).

When German car manufacturer Opel sponsored AC Milan, Italian football was at its best, and I Rossoneri were the poster boys. Maldini, Kaka and Shevchenko won Champions League with Opel front and centre of their iconic shirts.

5 O2 Arsenal 2002-2006

O2, an iconic sponsor for an iconic club at the most iconic time in its history. Wenger's Invincibles, arguably the best side in Premier League history, won the league title without losing a single game. The Gunners weren't the only ones who struck gold – think of all that sweet, sweet publicity O2 got by being associated with that team.

Arsenal have had their fair share of iconic short sponsors; JVC or Dreamcast could both have easily made this list, but it's hard to look past that famous Henry kneeslide. The partnership ended in 2006, and with it, Arsenal's ability to win Premier Leagues…

Top 10 best games from Arsenal's Invincibles season

Football FanCast takes a look at the best games from their Invincible season.

ByAlex Roberts Dec 7, 2023 4 Vodafone Man Utd 2000-2006

Old Trafford used to be where megastars were made. Becks with his long, dirty blonde hair was pulling in enough sponsorship money that he might end up buying the club if the Glazers ever sell up. Rooney was pre-hair transplant, and Cristiano Ronaldo was a skinny boy with something to prove. All of these players' careers started with Vodafone.

None of us here were privy to what was said in either Vodafone's or O2's boardrooms, but do we think it's a coincidence that two of the country's biggest telecommunications companies sponsored Arsenal and Manchester United at a time when their rivalry was at it's fiercest.

Revealed: The promises Joan Laporta made to Xavi to convince legend to stay on as Barcelona coach amid crippling financial crisis

Joan Laporta has reportedly made some lofty promises to Xavi to convince him to stay on as Barcelona coach despite crippling financial crisis.

Xavi to honour his current contractHas been promised a flurry of signings in the summerLaporta working to flesh out a new deal with NikeWHAT HAPPENED?

Xavi's initial announcement of his departure came in the wake of Barcelona's disappointing 5-3 defeat to Villarreal in January. However, following extensive discussions with club president Laporta and other board members on Wednesday, the 44-year-old has opted to continue as head coach at the Catalan club at least until 2025.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

According to the discussions held between Xavi and the club's hierarchy primarily focused on addressing any existing communication gaps and misunderstandings between the managerial team and the administration. Both parties engaged in a candid exchange of their respective expectations, aiming to foster a harmonious and productive working relationship moving forward.

The club is acutely aware of the need to bolster its squad for enhanced competitiveness in the upcoming seasons. Key areas which require reinforcement include midfield, particularly in the form of a dynamic playmaker, and a proficient left-sided forward. While these represent the immediate priorities, there is also a need to strengthen both the defensive flanks as Manchester City loanee, Joao Cancelo, is currently the only quality option at Xavi's disposal.

XAVI WANTS SIGNINGS

Before committing to his continued role as head coach, Xavi sought assurances regarding the club's plans for the upcoming transfer window, according to the same report. Despite the prevailing financial constraints, Xavi received a positive message from the club leadership regarding significant signings planned for the summer.

However, the realisation of these plans hinges upon certain preconditions, chief among them being the success of offloading surplus players to alleviate financial burdens. In this regard, Barcelona are already actively exploring avenues to facilitate player sales, thereby creating a financial leeway to engage in robust transfer activities.

Laporta is also reportedly exploring the possibility of renegotiating the club's existing contract with Nike, Barcelona's primary kit sponsor. He expressed the club's ambition to secure the most lucrative contract in the market and hopes to pull off the deal in the future. The anticipated influx of additional revenue from such renegotiations is envisioned to achieve financial equilibrium which will help them comply with La Liga's stringent financial regulations.

'I was like a proud dad when we won at Headingley' – Stuart Law

Former coach warns that West Indies are fully capable of springing another surprise against England in their forthcoming series

Andrew Miller16-Jan-2019Stuart Law, West Indies’ former head coach, believes that England will be “red-hot favourites” going into next week’s first Test in Barbados, but warns that his old side are fully capable of springing another surprise, just as they produced at Headingley two years ago in one of the most sensational run-chases of all time.Law, who oversaw a steady improvement in West Indies’ Test fortunes during his two-year spell in the Caribbean, stepped down from his role in September to take up the vacancy as Middlesex’s head coach. And, while being realistic about West Indies’ hopes of resisting an England team that secured an impressive 3-0 win in Sri Lanka before Christmas, Law was adamant that the players he’s left behind have sufficient skill, experience and determination to rise to their latest challenge.”Don’t underestimate the home team,” Law said. “There’s a core group of senior players who’ve been there for a while and proved that they can do it. If England aren’t on their game, West Indies have the team to make an upset.”England are going in as red-hot favourites but as the underdogs, West Indies have nothing to lose. They aren’t supposed to win, and the Caribbean crowd will tell them they are not supposed to win, and they like proving people wrong as well.”Despite being the stronger team on paper for the best part of two decades, England’s recent record against West Indies leaves plenty to be desired, not least in the Caribbean, where they have not won a series since 2004 and where they lost their most recent Test – coincidentally in Barbados – back in 2015.However, for sheer chutzpah, few results in recent times compare with West Indies’ incredible Headingley upset on the 2017 tour, when Shai Hope – with two hundreds in the match – and Kraigg Brathwaite – with 134 and 95 – helped square the series with one to play after a daunting run-chase of 322.”I think the euphoria of that first Test win in England in 17 years was something that is still being celebrated in the Caribbean,” Law said. “They don’t need much to have a party out there.Miguel Cummins and West Indies coach Stuart Law look on after having a chat in between overs•Getty Images”Some of the kids who stuck their hand up in that match are still involved now… Hope, Brathwaite, Jason Holder, Shannon Gabriel, those guys played their hearts out. Gabriel bowled fast every time he bowled the ball, and the two batters had a dream Test match.”They can do it, that’s the thing. It comes down to self-belief. If they’ve got self-belief they can achieve anything.”Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of that Headingley win was its context. It came only days after England had crushed the same set of players by an innings and 209 runs in a bitterly one-sided first Test.”To come back after Edgbaston in that way, I’d have to say it was the best Test performance I’ve been involved with,” Law said. “The enormity after what happened … you’re like a proud dad, watching the kids have a red-hot dip and all of a sudden they start to play cricket you can only dream of playing.”Not that Law would claim much of the credit for the turnaround, however.”I didn’t have to say much,” he said. “We sat down in the dressing room on [what should have been] day five, and the players just had a meeting. We were there as coaches to facilitate and prompt here and there, but they did all the talking.”They didn’t like it. They got abuse from back home – you should have read some of the social media abuse, and that was coming from their home crowd. It was tough for them, but I didn’t have to say too much. It was about pointing them in the right direction and saying you can go one of two ways. You can fall away and lose the series 3-0, or you can stand up and fight. What do you want to do?”They came up with what they wanted to do, and gave a very honest account of where they were at during that Test match. And once you’ve had that conversation, you are accountable for what you do going forward. They were all accountable at Headingley, and they stuck their hands up.”Stuart Law speaks at his Middlesex unveiling•Getty ImagesWest Indies’ hopes in the coming series have been boosted by the recall of Darren Bravo, a proven Test-match batsman who played a crucial hand in that Barbados win in 2015. He had been unavailable for most of Law’s spell in the Caribbean after becoming embroiled in the stand-off with CWI over player availability for T20 leagues. However, his return to the fray, says Law, is a sign of progress.”I think there’s been massive improvements,” he said. “Johnny Grave, the CEO, and Jimmy Adams, the director of cricket, have made massive strides to raise the professionalism.”But you can’t rush these disputes. I didn’t really understand the depths, but at times you have to side with the players. I had brief conversations with Darren and he made some very good points.”He’s a high-class player, West Indies could do with his experience, and you’d like to see commitment from other players as well. But the T20 riches are big, and the West Iindies boys are high in demand, so you can’t blame them, even if playing for West Indies is a shop window for these tournaments.”I didn’t blame one player once for choosing T20 cricket over Test cricket. Sure, I was disappointed, as I’d have loved to have them playing for West Indies, but they had other issues to keep to, and supporting their families was one of them.”In fact, supporting his own family was Law’s primary reason for calling an early end to his time with West Indies, and instead seeking out the security that comes with a four-year deal at Middlesex.”I’ve been asked to improve Middlesex’s white-ball cricket which has not been as competitive as it should be for a while so that will be a big focus,” he said. “But not at the expense of the Championship.”We’ve essentially still got the core of a group of players who won the County Championship a couple of years ago so we know they are capable of winning games and getting us back into the first division.”

Man Utd are leading the race for £19m “sensation” who Mainoo would love

Manchester United have struggled for consistency on every front this season, but their latest 3-2 win over Aston Villa could just give the side belief after a tough spell.

Erik ten Hag’s side is currently sixth in the Premier League, having won ten and lost eight of their 18 games so far in the top flight.

Man Utd could land Depay 2.0 with move for “electric” £35m Antony replacement

Erik ten Hag will look to sign a new winger in January to bolster his attack.

ByTom Lever Dec 27, 2023

With that in mind, it is no surprise that the boss wants to reinforce in January, with a talented midfielder potentially on the radar.

Man Utd transfers latest – Arthur Vermeeren

As per reports in Spain, many clubs are interested in the young midfielder, but the Old Trafford outfit have become the favourites to sign Arthur Vermeeren from Royal Antwerp.

Royal Antwerp midfielderArthur Vermeeren.

It is reported that Ten Hag is a huge admirer of the 18-year-old, who has been labelled as a “sensation” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig.

The boss is keen to reinforce his midfield due to injuries and the poor form of Sofyan Amrabat, with a fee of €22m (£19m) expected to be enough to conclude the deal this January.

Arthur Vermeeren’s style of play

Vermeeren became a constant in the Antwerp side last season at just 17 years old, and he has rapidly developed into an incredibly talented midfielder this season. The right-footed ace has started every game for his club this season, including in the Champions League, where he has earned plenty of plaudits.

The Belgian international is extremely mature for his age, and he oozes class despite having such little experience. He has featured as the right eight of a midfield three, in a double pivot, and as a lone defensive midfielder at times, which just highlights how incredibly versatile he is.

The table below briefly shows how talented Vermeeren is, using stats from this season’s Champions League.

As you can see, the Belgium international is absolutely incredible out of possession, and with his skill set, he would work perfectly alongside Kobbie Mainoo in a double pivot. Both players are extremely well-rounded and can perform to the same standard regardless of their role or position. Mainoo also excels out of possession, using his energy and athleticism to regain possession and stop transitions – having been hailed as a player that can do "everything" by ex-teammate Anthony Elanga.

However, the potential signing of the Antwerp wonderkid could unleash another side to Mainoo that we are yet to fully see. Vermeeren’s off-the-ball attributes would allow United’s number 37 to show more of his technical qualities, such as his vast passing range, vision, and ability to weave past opponents.

Overall, Ten Hag has shown that he is willing to put trust in youth already this season, with Alejandro Garnacho, Mainoo, and Willy Kambwala all featuring this season, which means Vermeeren would be given an opportunity to shine under the lights at Old Trafford if he were to make the move.

At present, the former Ajax boss has been forced to call upon Sofyan Amrabat in the centre of the park either alongside or in place of Mainoo, yet the experienced loanee has hardly impressed thus far, amid reports that he won't be signed permanently at the end of the season.

Dubbed "off the pace" by club legend Peter Schmeichel for his performance in the Manchester Derby, Amrabat – who arrived from Fiorentina on a temporary deal in the summer – hardly looks like being a long-term fit in Manchester, with the arrival of young Vermeeren only set to nudge him further toward the exit door.

In today’s market, £19m for such a talented prospect who has so much room for development seems like an absolute bargain that Manchester United simply must look to complete.

The Inter vice president has fond memories of Mourinho from his playing days. The Portuguese forged a close bond with the former Italy international during his time with the Nerazzurri as the duo went on to win the treble in 2009-10, beating Pep Guardiola's formidable Barcelona en route to the Champions League.

However, Mourinho's second coming in Italy did not go as planned. Although he led Roma to Europa Conference League glory, a poor start to the 2023-24 season saw him get fired from the capital club after spending two-and-a-half seasons at Stadio Olimpico.

WHAT ZANETTI SAID

When Zanetti was asked how Mourinho is dealing with this phase away from the pitch, Zanetti told Now he’s calm. I feel sorry for him because I know how much he cares for his teams. He didn’t expect to be sent away like this… De Rossi is doing a great job anyway.”

Mourinho is reportedly eager for a return to Manchester United to succeed Erik ten Hag. However, it is unlikely that INEOS would welcome him back at Old Trafford as they have already drawn up a potential shortlist, which includes current Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel.
