Kieswetter ruled out for six weeks

Craig Kieswetter has been ruled out for up to six weeks after suffering a broken thumb in Somerset’s County Championship match against Warwickshire

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Apr-2013Craig Kieswetter has been ruled out for up to six weeks after suffering a broken thumb in Somerset’s County Championship match against Warwickshire.Kieswetter sustained the injury to his right thumb from the last ball before lunch on the final day, when he was stood up to Peter Trego, and after interval handed the wicketkeeping gloves to Jos Buttler for the remainder of the match.Dave Nosworthy, Somerset’s director of cricket said: “Obviously this is very disappointing for us at this stage of the campaign and it is also very disappointing for Craig.”This was a freak accident and with him in such good form and in a good frame of mind with the bat and gloves, it has come at a bad time. However, he goes about things in a very professional way and with a good rehabilitation programme already planned we will have him back as soon as possible.”Somerset are fortunate to have another international wicketkeeper in Buttler ready as a straight replacement behind the stumps and he will be available until England’s one-day series against New Zealand which precedes the Champions Trophy in June.Buttler and Kieswetter were set for split duties in the early weeks of the season after Buttler’s elevation to the England limited-overs role at the expense of his county team-mate. Now, Buttler will have an extended run with the gloves in order to work on his keeping ahead of England’s next one-day series.

Thrilling Essex win stills talk of crisis

Essex’s successful run chase on a thrilling day in Cardiff took them second in Division Two and stilled talk of crisis

18-May-2013ScorecardTom Westley (pictured) and Jake Mickleburgh set up Essex’s successful run chase at SWALEC Stadium•Getty ImagesMark Pettini kept his cool to see Essex to their second LV= County Championship Division Two victory of the season by beating Glamorgan by five wickets with seven balls to spare at Cardiff. In an enthralling final day Essex chased down 275 for victory with openers Tom Westley and Jaik Mickleburgh hitting half centuries to give their side a good foundation and still the talk of crisis which clouded a poor start to the seasonAfter a couple of scares Pettini (47 not out) and Greg Smith helped to see Essex past the winning post at the end of the penultimate over. Essex took 22 points from the contest to Glamorgan’s four.Earlier in the day Glamorgan, thanks to 101 from skipper Mark Wallace – Glamorgan’s first Championship century of the season – left Essex 275 to win in 70 overs.Essex were given a fine start by Westley and Mickleburgh as the openers put on 143 for the first wicket before the latter fell lbw to Jim Allenby for 66.But though Essex were favourites to win they did suffer their setbacks on the way. Westley was run out for 88 by Michael Hogan coming back for a second run.And with 64 needed in fewer than 11 overs Ravi Bopara went for the big hit off slow left armer Dean Cosker only to be caught at long on by Stewart Walters.Significantly, Essex sent in the big-hitting Graham Napier as they required 58 from the final 10 overs. Napier also tried to hit Cosker out of the ground only to be caught at long offby Will Bragg leaving Essex still needing 45 from 7.5 overs. With seven runs required and 13 balls remaining skipper James Foster holed out, but Pettini and Smith saw them home.Glamorgan had resumed the final day on 303 for 6 – a lead of 189. The seventh-wicket pair of Wallace and Graham Wagg took the lead beyond 200. Wagg completed his half-century from 67 balls but his innings was ended by Reece Topley who had the Glamorgan bowler caught behind leaving them 343 for 7.Wallace went into the 90s as the lead also went beyond 250, but with the score on 375 Napier had Cosker caught behind. Hogan stayed around long enough for Wallace to become Glamorgan’s first century-maker of the summer.Wallace’s 15th first-class century came up off 171 balls with seven fours, but his fine innings ended in the next over when he was bowled playing forward to Bopara, departing for 101.Five balls later slow left armer Tim Phillips bowled Hogan as Glamorgan were dismissed leaving the visitors their 3.92 runs an over target in the final two sessions.

Trivedi faces suspension over anti-corruption code breach

Siddharth Trivedi, the Rajasthan Royals pace bowler, is likely to be suspended by the BCCI in relation to the IPL controversy

Amol Karhadkar13-Jun-2013Chavan aims to return to cricket

Ankeet Chavan, the suspended Rajasthan Royals player who was released on bail earlier this week, has targetted getting back to competitive cricket. “I have always given my 100%, I have always played cricket with a lot of passion,” he told the media in Mumbai. “I just hope and believe that I get a positive result from the judiciary system so that I get to play cricket again and I get back to my career, where I was.”

Siddharth Trivedi, the Rajasthan Royals pace bowler, is likely to be suspended by the BCCI pending inquiry for breaching the board’s anti-corruption code in relation to the ongoing IPL controversy.Trivedi is not under the scanner for any direct wrongdoing but for not reporting to the IPL or the BCCI the fact that he had been approached by bookies. During the investigation into the case involving his three team-mates who were arrested for alleged spot-fixing, he reportedly told police authorities about several approaches he received from bookies that he did not pay heed to. Not reporting it first to the board could go against Trivedi, and he is likely to receive a show-cause notice later this week.”Since he didn’t report any of these alleged approaches to either his team management or the IPL authorities or the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit, he has to be issued a show-cause notice and suspended till the investigation is complete,” a BCCI insider said.Trivedi, a witness for the prosecution, had also recorded a statement before a magistrate in a Delhi court last month.According to the BCCI’s anti-corruption code, Trivedi’s actions amount to a breach of the regulations. Article 2.4.2 of the code refers to “failing or refusing to disclose to the ACU of the BCCI (without undue delay) full details of any approaches or invitations received by the participant to engage in conduct that would amount to a breach of this anti-corruption code.” Article 2.4.3 explains how a breach would also include failing to report “approaches or invitations that have been received by any other party to engage in conduct that would amount to a breach of this Anti-Corruption Code”.Gujarat bowler-turned-bookie Amit Singh, who was arrested along with Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila and other bookies, is also likely to be sent a show-cause notice and suspended.Though Singh wasn’t contracted to any of the IPL franchises for the 2013 season, according to the board’s anti-corruption code a player is monitored for 12 months after his last domestic or international appearance. Singh had featured in Gujarat’s Ranji Trophy campaign in the previous domestic season as well as the IPL, and is allegedly suspected to have played a pivotal role in mediating between the cricketers and the betting mafia.

Karan Viradiya guilty of altering age for U-19 selection

Karan Viradiya, the Gujarat batsman, has been removed from India’s U-19 squad because his passport and school leaving certificate showed different dates of birth

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Jul-2013Karan Viradiya, the Gujarat batsman, has been removed from India’s Under-19 squad because his passport and school leaving certificate showed different dates of birth.According to his school-leaving certificate, Viradiya’s date of birth was October 17, 1994. But when corroborated against his passport, it was found that his actual date of birth was April 17, 1994, which would make him ineligible for selection to India’s U-19 squad. Viradiya had been named in the 15-member squad to tour Sri Lanka for two four-day matches, which begin on July 23.He will be replaced by Andhra batsman Ricky Bhui, who had been named in the limited-overs squad and will now play in the earlier part of the tour also.”We went through the documents thoroughly,” Rajesh Patel, Gujarat Cricket Association secretary, told . “However, the player had not submitted his passport, and we forwarded his name to the BCCI, purely on the basis of his school certificate.”The BCCI has been very strict (with age-related fraud) after the Ankit Bawne incident,” Patel said. “It’s very embarrassing. Now we will have to ask players to submit their passports too.”Bawne, the Maharashtra batsman, was replaced as captain of India’s U-19 squad in 2011 after a discrepancy in his date of birth was uncovered.Viradiya had been selected in the squad after enjoying a successful U-19 Col CK Nayudu Trophy last season, in which he aggregated over 400 runs.

Injured Shakib sidelined for up to four weeks

Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh allrounder, is likely to miss the beginning of the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League with a hairline fracture to his thumb, which puts him out of cricket for three to four weeks

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Aug-2013Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh allrounder, is likely to miss the beginning of the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League with a hairline fracture to his thumb, which could put him out of cricket for three to four weeks.Shakib had met with the national coach Shane Jurgensen upon his return to Dhaka from his stint at the Caribbean Premier League, and was taken for X-rays after his thumb was bandaged. BCB physician Monirul Amin said Shakib had picked up the injury while training with the Barbados Tridents and will be sidelined until mid-September.The Dhaka Premier League, after several postponements, is scheduled to begin on September 3 and the first-of-its-kind “player by choice” auctions for the tournament took place last Friday, where Shakib was recruited by Kalabagan Krira Chakra.Shakib has been struggling with injury over the course of the last season. He had to bowl 97 overs during the Tests against West Indies in November, 52 of them coming in the same innings. The stress left him with exertional compartment syndrome to his shin and in February, he was ruled out of Bangladesh’s tour of Sri Lanka to undergo surgery to his right calf muscle. After recovery, Shakib returned to international cricket, albeit as a batsman, for the Tests against Zimbabwe and eased into his role as a bowler for the limited-over series that followed.Shakib’s recovery is crucial not only for Kalabagan Krira Chakra, who finished ninth last season in the Dhaka Premier League, but also for Bangladesh as they will host New Zealand for two Tests, three ODIs and a Twenty20 in October.

In the second over of the day, overnight batsman Amol Ubarhande was dismissed by Bumrah, but Faiz Fazal and captain Shalabh Shrivastava raised hopes of a recovery with a 49-run stand for the third wicket. Fazal was eventually bowled by Dhurv for 77 off 197 balls, including twelve fours, with the score at 144 for 3 and for the next seven overs, Vidharbha scored just one run for the loss of Hemang Badani and Rashmi Parida.A stubborn 69-run stand between Shrivastava and Ranjit Paradkar gave Vidarbha some hope of fighting back, but Dhurv sent their chances crashing by trapping Shrivastava lbw for 56. Vidarbha went on to lose their next four wickets for just four runs. Bumrah dismissed Sumit Ruikar while Dhurv claimed this season’s first hat-trick, dismissing Shrikant Wagh, Umesh Yadav and Sandeep Singh in the 100th over, which meant Vidarbha’s two innings featured as many as 10 ducks.Dhurv finished with second-innings figures of 5 for 21 off 20.4 overs, while Bumrah capped off an impressive debut, taking a match tally of 7 for 89 which included four top-order wickets in the first innings and three crucial ones in the second innings.Odisha 205 and 110 for 2 (Podder 52*, Behera 42) trail Punjab 560 for 6 decl (Mandeep 175, Kohli 144) by 245 runs

Australia better prepared – Sutherland

Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland has defended Australia’s schedule as acceptable Ashes preparation

Daniel Brettig13-Nov-2013On the day England faced an Invitational XI strengthened by Cricket Australia after the ECB’s request to ensure better preparation for its players, the CA chief executive James Sutherland insisted Australia’s mixed bag of ODIs in India, domestic limited-overs matches at home then three hurried rounds of the Sheffield Shield had provided a superior Ashes run-in for the forthcoming series.Speaking at the Melbourne Press Club on Wednesday, following the launch of CA’s $29 million national cricket centre in Brisbane the previous day, Sutherland maintained his defiant stance on numerous issues. These included a summer schedule that surrenders the prime months of the season to the Big Bash League while squeezing the Shield and limited-overs tournaments into summer’s opening and closing weeks, and CA’s insistence that domestic sides place their ambitions for silverware behind the need to develop international players.Sutherland has clearly wearied of any criticism related to the schedule, which this year had Australia’s ODI team in India until after England arrived to prepare for the Ashes while also turning the domestic limited-overs competition into a kind of pre-season carnival at Sydney club grounds. He stressed the BBL was intended not to raise greater commercial revenue for CA but to build a new audience that would ensure the game’s continued survival.”There weren’t actually a lot of players who are playing in the Test team in Brisbane who were actually in India,” Sutherland said of the schedule. “At the same time there were a lot of players who were back here playing, who have been able to play in the first couple of rounds of Shield cricket and had a really good preparation. We’ve had a lot more cricket than England have over the last couple of months, so don’t tell me we haven’t had a good preparation because England have hardly played.”England had originally been slated to face a NSW XI composed of players not needed in the concurrent Sheffield Shield round: to all intents and purposes, a Second XI. However pressure applied by the ECB chief executive David Collier resulted in a selection of cricketers being pulled from each Shield squad to create an invitational team, much to the dismay of numerous state officials, who wondered aloud at why CA had been so accommodating to their opponents. Pat Howard, the team performance manager, has stated that reciprocal treatment will be afforded Australia on the 2015 Ashes tour. The match is being played on turf less green than it might have been in another season, as one of the other major CA changes for 2013-14 is a greater emphasis on ensuring domestic pitches reflect the conditions more likely to be seen at Test match level. The first two rounds of the competition have been characterised by the most amenable batting surfaces seen in some years, after Sutherland and Howard directed state associations and their curators to shave off the grassier extremes seen in recent seasons.”The fundamental thing for us is Shield cricket is not about determining who the champion state team is, that is incidental,” Sutherland said. “The real thing about Shield cricket is it needs to prepare cricketers for international cricket and particularly Test cricket and therefore the environment in which they’re playing should be as much like Test cricket as possible. We don’t want those pitches to be barren roads; we want the Gabba pitch to be like the first day pitch of a Gabba Test match.”I’m not in any way downplaying the importance of creating a competitive environment, but we are investing perhaps $30 million a year in Sheffield Shield cricket and ultimately what we want is a competitive environment where we can drive cricketers to learn how to be successful.”There was a temptation to chase the outright result to get six points to climb the Shield ladder and to some extent that is natural to want to be the winning team to qualify for the final. I stand by the comment that what we want is a really strong competitive Shield environment that delivers Test cricketers who can play winning cricket for Australia.”

Bangladesh's weak T20 bowling worries Mushfiqur

Mushfiqur Rahim, the Bangaldesh captain, expressed concern over the failures of his bowlers to defend scores of 171 and 188 in the Twenty20 Challenge Series against Bangladesh A

Mohammad Isam14-Dec-2013Shamsur Rahman suffers ankle injury

Bangladesh batsman Shamsur Rahman suffered an ankle injury during the last T20 match between Bangladesh and Bangladesh A in Dhaka on Saturday. Rahman, who was a part of the Bangladesh team, twisted his left ankle while fielding and was taken for an MRI. The results of the scan and his fitness status will be known tomorrow

Mushfiqur Rahim, the Bangladesh captain, expressed concern over the failure of his bowlers to defend scores of 171 and 188 in the Twenty20 Challenge Series against Bangladesh A. Mushfiqur captained a side that lost all three games against Bangladesh A, including the final T20 on Saturday. The poor bowling by the senior side is an extension of a trend where they managed to restrict international teams to a score of less than 150 only once in their last seven matches. Bangladesh conceded 204 runs against New Zealand last month and were also hit for 190-plus totals on three occasions in the last two years. On Saturday, Mashrafe Mortaza and Rubel Hossain were blasted out of the attack, each conceding more than 10 runs an over from their three overs. Al-Amin Hossain picked up two wickets but he, too, gave away 28 runs in 2.3 overs. For Bangladesh, the more concerning performances came from Abdur Razzak, who gave away 45 runs in three overs, and Sohag Gazi, who was taken for 26 in his two overs.”The matches were quite one-sided so we are concerned, particularly about our bowling,” Mushfiqur said. “Our biggest problem was batting but over the last 12 months, we have improved in that area. We have scored 170-plus regularly. Our worry is bowling in the first six overs and at the death. We must work in these areas.”Bowlers will leak runs on such a wicket but we have to minimise the damage. We have to practise in these regards. Bowlers have to survive by bowling bouncers and yorkers, in particular. We have enough time to rectify ourselves in these areas.”According to Shane Jurgensen, the Bangladesh coach, the bowlers are yet to bridge the gap between practice and execution. He admitted there is some confusion within the bowling group as they seem to do well in one-day cricket but have delivered different results in T20s.”We had set up this week to put the bowlers in tough situations so to be fair on them, they tried hard,” Jurgensen said. “But we are still struggling to execute what we learn in practice.”If a bowler is confused from the top of the mark as to what he wants to bowl, then he is not in the right frame of mind. I think we have enough time to mend these problems, and yes, more matches would be helpful.”Faruque Ahmed, the newly appointed chief selector, said the batsmen, too, needed to have better plans.”I would consider these matches as practice matches, but I would have felt better if the national team had won one or two games,” Ahmed said. “Bangladesh A played hard to win all three matches, very easily. Mominul Haque and Nasir Hossain had important roles to play.”It helps the team to play these matches. I think the senior side lacked in batting plans. We have to play more matches to improve and understand the game, and prepare better for the next matches. The bowling wasn’t good today, probably because the wicket was really good for batting.”The three members of Bangladesh’s team management agreed that a few new players were staking a serious claim for a place in the national side. Jurgensen saw T20 potential in Muktar Ali’s ability to bowl accurately, while Faruque believed that Sabbir Rahman was a contender for the allrounder’s role in the lower-middle order. Mushfiqur, too, spoke about the cricketers he believed would push the national players.”We have guys like Farhad Reza, Muktar Ali, Arafat Sunny, Rumman [Sabbir Rahman] and Mithun Ali who have done well. We want these players to push us in the senior side,” Mushfiqur said. “We have more matches in the near future when we will monitor performances of these players as well as those from the Bangladesh team.”The senior side is likely to play another set of T20 matches in the coming weeks as the Bangladesh Cricket Board is looking to arrange another short tournament before the National Cricket League, the country’s first-class competition.
