Fry tips West Ham to move for Adam Armstrong over Ivan Toney

Peterborough director of football Barry Fry has told The Transfer Tavern in an exclusive interview that West Ham are more likely to move for Adam Armstrong than Ivan Toney this summer.

West Ham have been credited with an interest in both strikers. According to Football Insider, the Hammers are one of multiple Premier League sides who are keen on the Blackburn Rovers man.

Elsewhere, The Sun have claimed that Toney is one forward the east London club have identified in their search for reinforcements ahead of the new campaign.

It is the former, though, who Fry sees as the most realistic option for West Ham. He told TT:

“I don’t think West Ham would go to that much [Brentford’s valuation] for Ivan, they wouldn’t.

“Whereas Adam Armstrong, I can see them having a punt on that, because he’d be a lot cheaper.”

Armstrong was in terrific form in the Championship last season, scoring 28 goals in 40 appearances. It makes it little surprise that the Englishman is one striker the Hammers are looking at as manager David Moyes looks to bolster his attacking options.

However, that does not look like it will be an easy deal either, with Football Insider stating that Southampton are winning the race for the 24-year-old.

Collymore hails Leeds hero Kalvin Phillips

Former Premier League striker Stan Collymore has named Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips as England’s best player throughout their Euro 2020 campaign.

The Lowdown: Phillips excels for England

The Three Lions were beaten on penalties by Italy in the final on Sunday night as their tournament ended in painful fashion at Wembley.

However, Phillips was impressive on the night and during the whole competition, excelling in the middle of the park and replicating his Leeds form.

The Latest: Collymore hails Leeds hero

The 25-year-old’s performances were so good that Collymore felt he was England’s best player overall at the finals, taking to Twitter to hail Phillips as “My @England player of the tournament.”

Phillips started every game for Gareth Southgate’s side at Euro 2020, building an excellent relationship with Declan Rice in the middle of the park.

The Verdict: Deserved praised for Phillips

It is great that the rest of the country has been able to witness Phillips’ brilliance, with Leeds fans having grown accustomed to such performances week in week out.

He is a fantastic footballer who continues to go from strength to strength and he is likely to be a huge player for the Whites again next season based off the fine form he has shown for England this summer.

Alas, the more that Phillips plays like this, the harder it could become for Leeds to keep hold of him, but they must do all they can to keep him at Elland Road for many years to come.

Rain has the final say

A round-up from the last round of group matches in the Friends Provident Trophy

Cricinfo staff 28-May-2008Midlands DivisionLeicestershire eased through by 13 runs on Duckworth-Lewis against Nottinghamshire in a match that finished just before 8pm at Oakham. Graeme Swann and Samit Patel both took three wickets to restrict the home side to 147 for 7 from 35 overs, but after several rain interruptions Nottinghamshire could not piece together what was in the end a target of 61 from 12 overs.Northamptonshire killed off any hopes Ireland had of a second FP Trophy win at Dublin with a 99-run victory that wasn’t enough to edge Nottinghamshire out of the last eight on Net Run Rate. Andrew Hall’s 72 helped the visitors battle back from 55 for 4 to 205 which was too much for Ireland who folded in the chase. Nicky Boje was the architect of their demise with 4 for 12 and fittingly he took the last wicket, caught and bowled.

South East Division Sogginess abounded in the south east. Middlesex beat Essex by 18 runs on Duckworth-Lewis at Lord’s, leaving Essex to head into the quarters on a winning note. Tim Murtagh and Dirk Nannes forced an early wobble under swinging conditions with some lift off the track but Ryan ten Doeschate’s 97 lifted Essex to a comfortable platform at 244 for 8. His innings included six fours and three sixes, the best of which was a delicate sweep that somehow carried over the rope, borne along as if by magic. The elements were hardly magic, however, and persistent rain meant Middlesex’s innings was a stop-start affair which was finally ended on 120 for 2 after 25 overs, with Billy Godleman on 43. It was enough for the win which denied Essex home advantage in the quarter-finals.Meanwhile, Surrey’s dead rubber with Sussex was washed out at Whitgift School, with Surrey on 189 for 5 after being sent in.

British government bans Zimbabwe team

The British government has made it clear to the ECB that the Zimbabwe team will not be allowed into the country to take part in next summer’s ICC World Twenty20

The pressure on the ICC to act over Zimbabwe grew with news that the British government has made it clear to the ECB that the Zimbabwe team will not be allowed into the country to take part in next summer’s ICC World Twenty20.The consensus was that while the side would be barred from taking part in a bilateral one-day series in May, they would be permitted to attend for the ICC event. But, in the light of the deteriorating political situation in Zimbabwe, that line has hardened in the last week.Gordon Brown, Britain’s prime minister, told the House of Commons that he wanted the Zimbabwe side banned. “The secretary for culture is working with the English board,” he said. “We want to ensure that Zimbabwe does not tour England next year and we will call for other countries to join us in banning Zimbabwe from the Twenty20 international tournament.”Jeremy Hunt, the culture, media and sport spokesman for the Conservatives, told parliament: “Gordon Brown needs to match tough words with tough actions. “If we are not going to recognise the regime, why are we welcoming a team that is run by Mugabe’s henchmen and will only be used to legitimise the evil he is perpetrating? Banning them from coming, by refusing to issue visas would send a clear message to Mugabe – the Zimbabwe cricket team is not welcome here whilst his criminal regime hangs on to power.”The ICC, which is to discuss Zimbabwe’s future next week, is left with a difficult choice. If it suspends or expels Zimbabwe from Full Member status then the problem goes away as they would immediately forfeit their place in the competition. But if Zimbabwe remain eligible to play, then the ICC will need to decide if the event can proceed in England.Next week’s ICC annual conference should have been staged in London, but with Peter Chingoka, the Zimbabwe board chairman, barred from entry to the UK, the executive moved the show to Dubai. It would take a complete about-turn for them to accept that the World Twenty20 could proceed as planned without a Full Member being present, and when the executive last met the majority of members were adamant such a situation would not be allowed.

Ex: Abraham keen on West Ham move

David Moyes may have just been handed a big boost over one of his West Ham summer transfer targets…

What’s the word?

It’s widely believed that the Scotsman views Tammy Abraham as his no.1 choice to bolster the Hammers’ frontline, whilst it’s also thought that Chelsea are open to selling the 23-year-old after he struggled for minutes under Thomas Tuchel.

An ever-reliable source has provided a fresh update into the Irons’ pursuit, and it’s surely great news for Moyes.

Speaking on this week’s ‘The West Ham Way’ podcast, the trustworthy ExWHUemployee claimed that the England international is open to a switch to the London Stadium this transfer window.

He said:

“Apparently Abraham is keen on a move to West Ham.

“He likes Declan, he likes some of the other players in the squad and obviously he’s a London boy and stuff, so I think he is tempted to come to West Ham.

“And obviously Moyes likes him a lot so we might see some movement on that in the next few weeks.”

Boost for Moyes

It’s no secret that the East London side are absolutely desperate for a new forward before next season.

Currently, Moyes is set to head into a Europa League campaign with just one senior option – an injury-prone Michail Antonio, who flattered to deceive in their pre-season game against League Two outfit Leyton Orient earlier this week.

The 31-year-old, who has been converted from a winger, has never started more than 24 matches in the big time since his arrival at West Ham. And that speaks volumes.

If Abraham is truly Moyes’ top target, then this news will certainly be encouraging and should give the Irons the boost they need to pull the trigger on his signing.

The Blues are said to value the Englishman at around £40m but could be enticed into selling him for an initial £30m, as per Football Insider, which is closer to the 58-year-old’s £25m valuation.

Despite seeing his game time tail off following the arrival of Tuchel in January, Abraham still finished the season as their second top-goalscorer on six goals, just one fewer than their penalty-taker, Jorginho.

Once described as a “phenomenal player” by former Premier League manager Alex McLeish, the 6 foot 3 striker has found the net 30 times since his breakthrough at Chelsea. It’s no wonder ex-academy teammate Kasey Palmer dubbed him “the goal machine.”

This latest update from Ex should leave both Moyes and the Hammers faithful absolutely buzzing. It’s time to make a move for the £36m-rated Abraham.

Liverpool fans fume at Naby Keita claim

A number of Liverpool supporters are unhappy after Neil Jones’ claim that Naby Keita could sign a new Reds contract this summer.

The Guinean has endured a hugely frustrating Liverpool career to date, having arrived with such big expectations on his shoulders in 2018.

While Keita has still produced good performances at times, playing a part in the Reds’ success, there is no denying that he has been underwhelming overall.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

Incredibly, Keita has still only made 76 appearances for Liverpool, with injury problems and patchy form both holding him back too often.

Despite this, Jones has claimed on The Kopite Podcast [via Anfield Edition] that he thinks the 26-year-old “will sign a new contract at Liverpool”, extending his stay at Anfield in the process.

It isn’t a rumour that has gone down too well with these Reds fans on Twitter, however, with some questioning whether or not it makes sense, and one supporter going so far as to call the news ‘awful’ and ‘rewarding failure’.

PCB official resigns soon after Altaf sacking

Javed Zaman, a Pakistan board advisor on grass-root level cricket, has handed in his resignation stating domestic problems as the reason

Cricinfo staff14-Jun-2008Javed Zaman, a Pakistan board advisor on grass-root level cricket, has handed in his resignation stating domestic problems as the reason. His decision to quit follows the PCB’s sacking of Saleem Altaf, a senior board official, reportedly on allegations that he leaked sensitive information to the press.Zaman was a close associate of Altaf and it has been suggested that he may have quit over the sacking of Altaf. Two other board officials were also sacked at the same time as Altaf. But Zaman maintained his decision was for personal reasons.”I had been working with the board in different capacities for almost three decades on honorary basis but now my domestic activities are not allowing me to continue with the job,” Zaman told Pakistan daily .It is believed conversations Altaf had with several journalists over a period of time were being recorded by the board. Zaman said bugging the phone was wrong. “No law allows recording of private conversion of any person the world over and it is a spiteful act.”

Whelan thrilled by big Son news out of Spurs

Speaking to Football Insider, pundit Noel Whelan has been left thrilled by allegedly ‘massive’ news out of Tottenham Hotspur involving Son Heung-min.

The Lowdown: Spurs source drops exciting two-word Son message

According to a report by Football Insider, a Tottenham Hotspur source recently dropped the exciting two-word message ‘it’s done’ when referring to Son’s long-awaited new deal.

As explained by the outlet, he will earn a blockbuster £200,000-per-week and has committed his future to Spurs after talks with new manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

Irrespective of what happens with Harry Kane this summer, the South Korea superstar is now allegedly set to stay at Spurs after finalising his new contract.

The Latest: Whelan thrilled…

Reacting to this development, former Premier League striker Whelan has been left thrilled – explaining how the fans ‘absolutely love him’ and it is ‘massive’ that he has committed his future.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-updates/” title=”Tottenham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“When you put Harry Kane to one side, the driving force in their side is Son,” he told Football Insider.

“He has been so consistent over the years and a great servant to the club.

“Spurs will need somebody who stands up and changes the rhythm of a game if Kane leaves. Son is definitely capable of doing that. He is one of the strongest, mentally, out there.

“The fans absolutely love him, as has every manager he has worked under. This is massive that he’s committed to the project over the next few years.”

The Verdict: Huge news…

Amid the exit saga surrounding Kane in what could dominate summer discussion, this major claim that Son has now finalised a new deal at Tottenham is indeed ‘massive’.

The 28-year-old was, by some distance, the Lilywhites’ second-most crucial player over 2020/2021 after Kane – scoring 17 goals and assisting 10 others in 26 Premier League starts (WhoScored).

Only Kane managed a superior goals and assists record combined (23G, 14A), while Son averaged more key passes per 90 in the final third than any Spurs player including their star Englishman (WhoScored).

The forward staying in north London, as per FI, certainly comes as a big boost for Nuno Espirito Santo’s first season in charge.
